Last week, I rode my XB12S to Statesville to have Don Tilley's men do the 5000 miles service. While I was waiting, I talked to Don about Buell. I asked him the following: "Don, being associated with Buell like you are, what's in store for the near future Buells?" He said that Buell is working on twin throttle bodies as we speak, ie, a throttle valve for each cylinder. He said this upgrade alone will give the current engines about 10 hp. He also said that Buell has a prototype XB right now with 150 hp. He said that he didn't know if Buell would sale a bike like that as a street bike, but it would be reliable. Based on his comments, I feel strongly that Erik is listening to his customers (us), and he will be bring out bikes in the near future with hp upgrades as well as performance kits and components.

In case anyone wants to believe this, remember that Don fell off hard just a short time ago, and is on plenty of meds... And anyhow, with his accent, you probably misunderstood him, LSN.

The need to re sync throttle bodies on the BMW Boxer twins is an issue that reoccurs with enough frequency that I took notice, even though I'm not entirely certain of what it entails. Any time the engine starts running poorly, the first recommended course is to re sync them.

The suggestion to re sync throttle bodies also seems to come up pretty frequently on the Suzuki SV1000 and DL1000 engines.

I get the impression [perhaps a mistaken one] that they can be a real nuisance.

Perhaps some one can educate here?

Synch-ing throttle bodies is no big deal. It's easier than synch-ing carbs. All you need is a vacuum guage. You can get a good one for around $80.

Isn't TPS reset all about re-synching the throttle body?

The VROD has been out on the market know for over two years and has twin throttle valves. I haven't heard any negative comments about the VROD as of yet.

Don Tilley has done more for Buell than any other engine builder I know of. He was heavily involved with the development of the cylinder heads as well as other pieces of engine hardware. The big bore setup, high flow heads and larger throttle valves for the Sceaming Eagle VROD for 2005 were all developed in his shop in Statesville. The prototype engine was then sent to HD for testing. If memory serves, this was discussed in one of the biker mags not to long ago.

Don Tilley has done alot. But he has not done more then Vance & Hines as they are doing the best as of now with the V-Rod and HD work with them also. And Hal's has done just as much as Don has ever done.As far as the Big Bore Kit for the V-Rod...we have seen that done by HD back in 2003.

As far as I know, the VROD that V&H has been racing is not a standard VROD engine. The complete engine was devloped by V&H for racing only. The V&H engine is much bigger and much more powerful than the HD VROD engine. Also, I was told by HD mechanics in other dealerships that when they went to HD school for factory training, the instructors would always talk about the development work and effort that Don Tilley has put into these engines.

Accurate....If it took you until now to figure that out, give yourself 40 lashes with a reed cane and call me in the morning for remedial Buell training.

Yes. Don did fall and has an accent.

Don's not walking around yet, but he's still running things from his 3 wheeled get around buggy thingy. He was there and most active when I talked to him earlier in the week.

I didn't notice any accent ; )

Synch-ing Throttle bodies is required maintenance for most (all?) multiple throttle body systems. It means synch-ing the throttle bodies with each other--matching the fuel & airflow for each throttle body so each cylinder is getting the same fuel/air mix.

DC,
What Tp said. If two or more throttles are not adjusted so that they provide the same exact throttle opening, then one cylinder will run harder than the other(s).

TPS reset/rezero is a procedure whereby the ECM learns the output voltage of the throttle position sensor for when the throttle is completely closed. Basically it teaches the ECM to recognize throttle position based upon the reference voltages it stores for the fully closed position and the fully open position.

I never feel like I'm explaining that very well. Sorry.

Aa5ch,
Synching the throttle bodies on a BMW is actually more a case of keeping the airbleed screws clean of carbon build up. Clean them, put the screws back in exactly where they were, and the problem goes away.

Whether these "features" make it to the street bikes or not, the current Buell FX race bikes DO HAVE two, separate intakes:

It would be a shame if that dual throttle setup was never sold to the public, as "race kit" or standard equipment. Those dual carbon stacks would be enough to justify the installation of the City's see-thru tank on coolness factor alone.

The other part of the problem with the BMW 'surging' was the fuel injection mapping. Syncing the throttle bodies was part of the equation. I think Motorcycle consumer news had a article on that.

very thoughtful, and proof that they listen!

Give me another reason to buy another Buell. An XBR with dual throttle bodies and the see through plastic body parts would be the shizz-nit!

Black wheels are a must as well!

One other thing I want to point out about Don Tilley is that he was building flat track racing Harleys over 20 years ago and winning national events then. His rider was Gene Church who also lives in Statesville. If anyone wants to learn about Real high performance technology and in-house designed and built products for Harleys and Buells that are not available through Harley or Buell, see Don. When it comes to performance, he is second to none!
