Went to two local shops (on in Fairfield CT and the other in Ansonia CT). Neither has ever worked on an XB so they have no idea what it would take to do this or what it would cost. One doesn't even want the job. HD dealer in CT who used to be a Buell dealer is willing to do the intake seals. They want over $1000 for the seals + the 20,000 mile service. In the last 2,000 miles the bike has had new filter engine oil and trans oil, new belt, new front rotor, new pads, new tires. What I'd like done now includes: Intake seals New injectors New plugs New wires New O2 sensor (why not if the engine is being rotated?) Fuel filter Anything I am missing here? Any idea what all of that should actually cost at an indie shop? Also, any recommendations for Buell XB friendly indie shops in CT or RI? |

Intake seals alone on an 08 Uly is about 3 hrs labor, and if their rate is similar to ours ($109/hr) I can see how it would add up quick. |

Hmmm.... $100: Rotating the engine for service (both down then back up) $150: Two intake seals installed $150: Two injectors installed $20: New plugs installed $50: New wires installed $100: New O2 sensor installed $150: Fuel filter (requires dropping fuel pump and replacing filter and orings) Then round up to $800, because parts and consumables are always more expensive then I think they should be, and something stupid always goes wrong. So $1000 from a dealer sounds high, but not insane. I pulled my fuel pump and filter at 30k miles, and it was a waste of time, the filter was fine. (Message edited by reepicheep on August 18, 2016) |

I still don't get how auto repair places can mandate book rates for parts, but never combine them when the first 30% and last 30% of four different jobs are exactly the same steps, and you only do them once when you do them together. It makes me want to go in and get a bid for two jobs together that I know require all the same disassembly, have them refuse to discount it, tell them to do just one, then when I go to pick it up and inspect to make sure it is back together, then immediately tell them to now do the second job. Mini did this too me recently. I had the recall on the power steering pump, so BMW had to replace it on their dime. That requires dropping the front subframe on a mini. They (correctly) noted that my lower rear isolators were shot, and told me it would be $1000 to replace them due to labor. Of course it wouldn't be, once they have that subframe off, it's 15 minutes to pop off the old ones and pop on the new ones using their special tool. And they would have used the $100 BMW isolators (for $200 total, of which $160 is pure profit for BMW). So I said no, drove the car home, immediately spent a day redoing what they just did (removing the front subframe), and put on $30 worth of non BMW branded OEM isolators I mail ordered from Pelican parts. BMW lost an easy $200 in pure profit, I lost a Saturday (doing a hobby that I don't mind doing). I suppose it works for BMW though, because for every guy like me that does it themselves, there are 100 people who just shrug and say "OK, replace it". It kind of works for me also. It drives down the price of used Mini's (and BMW's) to be dirt cheap for what they are if you are willing and able to do your own work on them. |

It is on the other side of CT from you, but Danbury Harley knows their stuff, a bunch of their guys own and ride Buells. You will probably be quoted the same price just based on the above posts, but they are not afraid to touch a Buell. |

(FYI, those prices quoted were guesses by me as a home mechanic applying common shop rates of $100 per hour) (And, frankly, are probably what I would charge if somebody came up to my garage and asked me to do those jobs in my spare time, as crazy high as they sound.) |

You are forgrtting the mention of the 20K service, which is also min. 3 hr flat rate labor, though a Buell won't need many of the things an HD gets, like belt tension and steering head adjustment. But they will lube and adjust the cables, adjust the clutch, inflate the tires to proper PSI and document the tread depths, check the charging system and battery connections, lube the kickstand, among a myriad of other things they are supposed to do at that mark as well. |
