Mike Ciccotto did a great interview on Two Wheel Tuesday, I just wish Greg had asked some better questions.

I, along with many others, had the opportunity to visit with Mike at Road America during the "Bring It Home Rally" and he's a first class guy who was genuinely glad to have so many fans there.

I wonder if any of the NEW technology he refered to will trickle down to us???

Yes, very cool seeing Buell get some press time and seeing the XB12R on the set and seeing Eric talk about the company's new baby in the City X.

Eric seems very real on camera. Nervous, excited, like the typical engineering talking about their latest project.

After watching all I can think of is 140hp and 110lbtq. When can I have mine?

Curious, wasn't there something about HD finally funding the Buell race team?

I thought Greg did a good job. Woulda been cool to have more time and depth, but the thing already felt like a Buell informercial (not that I think that would be a bad thing).

My impression is that Buell / Harley will be building the motors for them, but that they will still be a private team, and are actively looking for sponsorship next year.

I also thought they did a good job of balancing the "Buell is the Harley Race bike" point of view, not just pandering to the Harley crowd, but inviting the Harley folks in to "root for the home team". And recognizing the time and money that Harley is no doubt offering them.

I want Greg's job!
I thought they did a good job and Buell got quite a bit more time and exposure than I thought they would.
Mike did a great job, be kind of scary being interviewed on national TV.

Good job Speed!

Buell is getting a lot more coverage now than they had in the past.
People aren't asking me what kind of bike I ride so much any more.
I get "Nice Buell" here lately.
The times they are a changin'.
Mike did do a lot better than I would have, I can see me just standing there with a blank stare.
Greg's OK in my book, he takes a lot of heat from all sides, and still smiles.

I watched the show and it was great coverage for the Buell. It made me think about something though. Mike said that his XB12R race bike had a 8,000 RPM redline. As we all know from discussions on this board, RPM and Torque are the main components that make up horsepower. Maybe they are able to turn 8,000 RPM's because the engine is torn down and rebuilt after every race. That being said though, a production XB12 engine with an 8,000 RPM redline, taller gearing, and a sixth gear would be awesome. I don't know how realistic or expensive that would be for a production push rod v-twin engine but if they could do it I'd be first in line.

Macbuell they have a different ecm then the average race ecm that we all know and have but if your a licensed racer you can get the ecm there using.

Mike did say there would be more corperate(HD and Buell)funding for next year and yes they still are looking for more.

BadS1, how does the ECM affect the RPM redline?

Mike did say that HD / Buell would be providing the engines next season. Maybe that means the technology will trickle into production?

The True Race ECM controls a lot of things.
Like the fan, when it comes on and which direction.
The red line, the timing advance, fuel curve, ect.
One thin it doesn't do is "learn", it only does what you tell it to do, no closed loop mode, so they have to set it for each race, which is also why they use it. I'm sure it does other functions as well.

Look at this math

140Hp / 8000rpm = .0175hp/rev Race Bike

100Hp / 6500rpm = .0153hp/rev Stock Bike

Assume the relationship is linear

.0153hp /rev * 8000rpm = 123Hp out of a stock bike if it could take the rpm.

Hmm lets take that one wild hair farther. Let's assume one Super Duper Balance Buell turning 12000 rpm..... 12000rpm * .0153hp/rev = 185Hp

Okay so all we have to do is get the mass of the valve train down to almost nothing so it doesn't float and get the piston connecting rod mass down and have it ultra balanced and man we would be riding rice rocket eating machines!

Oh well so much for day dreaming!

Good start, but I believe the ultimate RPM limit is related to piston speed and it's effect on lubricant film strength.

So add "Magic cylinder coating" to your wish list.

They are NOT reaching 8,000 rpm with the stock XB12 stroke.

They had two engines they were playing around with at the Time of Road America when Road Racing World did a feature on the bike:

Both engines had a 3.8 inch bore

The 1160cc version used the stock Blast/XB9 Stroke: 3.125, and they are revving it to 8500 rpm

The 1290cc version used a 3.47 inch stroke, that one revs to 7500 rpm

More info can be found HERE

I don't know which engine configuration they had at VIR, I did not ask.

Good interview by Mike, the camera work was a little screwed up when they were going between the stock and the race bike and comparing the differences, but good job overall.

Hey TERRY, WHAT HAPPENED, did they think Mike was cuter so he's the only one that got to be on TV with Greg?

I swore he said that race bike had 1050cc and different heads. So if it is a 1050cc wouldn't that make it a built up 9 and not a 12?
