Picked up a '03 XB9S with just 4K miles on it. I am trying to go thru it now to make sure all the recalls are done & any issues these bikes have are addressed. The bike has the translucent blue tank & windscreen. It also has the race pipe & ecm, haven't had the air box apart to see if there is a K&N in there. It's got a set of new tires & should be ready to go. Here's a few pics

Nice! Good to see you back on the board! I liked your S1 and Nightster before, but this Lightning is honestly my favorite! I've become quite a fan of XBs. |

Looks like it has the '03 belt and pulleys Check your 77 connector and solder the wires or put an 'RF Splice connector kit' Zip tie your clutch cable away from the exhaust header Czech your wheel bearings And get some frame pucks & axle sliders |

Guess I need to figure out the TPS stuff now. Rode it to work & now it won't run, it idles really low then dies. When it barely idles it won't rev up, just stalls & dies. I'll probably just get the CMI LITE diagnostics tool & adjust the TPS myself. (Message edited by grancuda on August 08, 2016) |

Yeah, definitely sounds like a TPS reset is in order. |

First I heard of this CMI tool, Interesting. I started my ed-u-ma-ca-tion on all this ECM and EFI stuff several years back and had a medically enforced break (Drunk driver) and now back "in school". I am in learn mode as well however after reading several threads and webpages on the CMI tool It would seem it could be handy for some folks but seems expensive for what you get. You can buy a dongle cable for about $35 and many include ECM spy or Tuner pro, If not you can download those for free off the net. You can also MAKE your own cable as well for a net investment of software and cable for under $15. I have several Buells to get back on the road and learning how to fine tune and do this same work but I have spent a LOT of time researching and I think** you would be better off with a better tool such as ECM spy or Tunerpro. Just my $0.02 There are manuals online, plenty of tutorials on here and XBforum. There are You tube videos, and no lack of resources. If you want links I can post them. If you for some strange reason cannot find copies of the software PM me and Ill burn you copies. I have several versions. **NOTE** It sure is helpful to find someone experienced in this before you leap in the deep end of the pool. Maybe someone closeby you might be willing to show up and walk you thru it your first time. Im open to the same. Anyone in or near Portland Oregon area and willing to help an Idiot, Ill buy you lunch or dinner and beers. |

I am very excited to join the community. Leaving my Yamaha in the past. Any helpful info will be appreciated. I am 6,1 250. I am putting 1 in drop down pegs to help with comfort. Anymore suggestions Not trying to hijack your post. Thought it was cool we are getting the bike within days apart |

Drop down pegs will scrape, if it has decently sticky tires you will be able to crank it over to where those lower pegs are a problem. Not sure where you live, but heat from the engine on the seat is an issue, you'll want to deal with that by putting some aluminum insulation on the bottom of the seat. Design Engineering makes some good stuff, not sure if anyone caries the precut stuff anymore. Insert key, pour in fuel, ride. |

The knowledge vault on this forum is a good place to start. Do some research and do a lot of reading before making changes. I am by NO means a Buell expert but I find it really interesting the differences. The Buells and especially the XBs are pretty good stock and dont need much. So many upgrades and improvements are bolt on, or cosmetic or tailoring to personal preference. Spend some time on some sportster forums like the XL page. What I like on there is so many builds where guys detail their upgrades and many times results via dynos. Some good builds on there and you start to see a pattern of what works. However most Sportsters need MAJOR surgery and a lot of Motor parts. Cams, heads, cyls, where the XB already has these items. The basics seem to be breather mod, air cleaner mod, muffler mods and the biggest is working thru ECM/ECU issues and fine tuning. I would say the biggest problem and thing to watch for is bad electrical connections. UPGRADE YOUR GROUNDS! Wont hurt anything and WILL solve a lot of problems down the road. Consider adding more ground points as well. See this site as well: http://steveturnbull.co.uk/buell/thexbpages/index. htm Be sure to click on each topic across the top of the page. The XB page has some good stuff but they changed the page format a while back and I dont care for it. (Other Buell forum, this side is more tuber friendly and the other one seems to lean more towards XB) Also, just do basic Google searches on topics and that brings up topics that the search function on this and other boards dont always show or older threads. Try variations. Buell ECM tuning, Buell XB backfire on decel, Buell XB o2 sensors, Buell XB exhaust. Oh,,, and read this! See: http://ausbuells.informe.com/forum/buell-tech-f4/b uell-xb12-exhaust-dyno-shootout-t513.html The original links Im not sure work anymore with American Sportbike closing. The report in its original form was very well done. I printed it out when I could still access it via the original pages. Hopefully you can view it via the links above |

Ill post pix of mine shortly as well, I have an XB9SX as well and same colors. Mine is very low mileage and was lightly wrecked and I got it super cheap via a Auction/insurance place. Its BOG stock. No mods. So I have been doing a lot of research and proceeding very carefully. Fix the light damage, and run it a bit stock and then do some tasteful well executed mods. Based on the exhaust shootout and extensive research I bought a lightly used Micron Serpent exhaust system as its widely regarded as the best all arounder. K&N filter, Intake mod, breather mod and save my original maps, but I have a second ECM/ECU and going to play with that a little. White wire mod as well. Thats my plan and hope it helps you in yours. |

Micron is definitely the bees knees. But then I'm a little biased (Message edited by phelan on August 11, 2016) |

I did indeed buy her. I def want to get the 1 in drop pegs, I live in florida so I'm not to worried about the scraping. Bike runs great but I do have the weird rattle that comes up the handle bars when I use the front break. Something feels loose. Any suggestions

Sosick, Try retorquing the steering head bearings. Mine had those symptoms before I discovered this. Careful to not overtorque. |
