Hey folks. Have a funky issue going on with my 05 xb12scg. When I get the bike good and hot(particularly towards the end of my 20 minutes commute home) the bike will start missing, after the first miss I have about 2 minutes to park it or I''ll be dead. The kicker is if I let it cool down for 5 minutes. I can hope back on and go for a another 10 ish minutes. I checked connector 77 and it looks good. I have not had any of the symptoms that I know to be associated with a Bad voltage regulator(dimming and failing dash) Any thoughts on where I should go next? I need to replace my low fuel sensor, Im curious if anything else from that loom could be melted and that caused the sensor to go out? Thanks guys, Dave W. |

Sounds like the cam positioning sensor. Got a heat gun? If so, point it at the timing cover, almost on it. Have the bike idling after a cold start. If after a few minutes the bike dies, you found your culprit. (Message edited by phelan on June 26, 2016) |

SO I used a hairdryer(no heat gun, added to the shopping list) Got it hot to the point it was uncomfortable to touch the cam sensor for more than a moment, bike fired up fine, continued applying heat for 5 minutes no change in idle...=/I suppose I could ring out from the battery to the end of the run that has connector 77 just to verify its getting a good bite. It has the old style connection has not been updated to the Deutsche connector. |

Ignition coils are known to go bad like that too. |

I believe the test for those is measure resistance right? Run it hot the re test? Will look for the spec |

So resistance across the primary coil is 1.5 ohms, the secondary is 12.5k ohms. Think I'm going to order my self a coil! Thanks guys |

For future comparison and documentation, what are the normal coil primary and secondary resistance values? |

.5-7 ohms on the primary and 5.5k to 7.5k ohms on the secondary |

Remember that the ignition coils we have on injected bikes is actually two coils in one package. You seem to be measuring the primaries and the secondaries in series. (values added up) I have found that the only real way to test a flaky coil is to try a new one. Is there someone nearby that can lend you one? If my faulty coil theory is correct, it would measure fine when room temp and crap out when hot. |

New coil got put in, Solved the problem. I did find out rather embarrassingly though my resistance reading is no good on my multimeter. The new coil tested closer to correct by comparison to the other. So I heated up the old unit and got and open circuit on the primary coil. While I was at it fresh plug wires and plugs. Runs great now! Thanks for the help guys! |

Glad you solved your problem! Interesting failure for sure. When my coil went bad, only half of it failed. Bike was only running on one cylinder. |

What I've realized is the bike is running super great now. My only experience with bikes before this was single cylinder dirtbikes. So What I'm getting at is I think one of my cylinders was missing and I didn't realize it. Attributing it too its being a twin. |
