I've had my "new 03" xb9s for a month now and have about 450 miles so far. I checked the oil a couple(hundred) miles back, and just slightly low-no problem. I checked the oil yesterday and the level is halfway between the "low" mark and the bottom of the stick!!!

Has anyone else seen consumption like this?? Not sure exactly how much oil this equates to but I could guess about 1/2 quart +.

Note: the bike had 65 miles when I took delivery so I cannot account for how it was treated during those miles. My guess would be: "rode hard, put away wet".

thanks,

tank

If it was rode hard and put away wet then theory has it that you should have a better seal on your rings and cylinder walls as the more compression the more sealing effect on your rings and this would have helped them seat a little better. This would translate into less blow-by of oil past your rings. Of course there are differing opinions on how a motor should be broke-in.......Odie

When are you checking the level? Warming up the bike until the idle comes down or after you have been riding for awhile?

My blast used oil like that when it was new. Oil consumption went WAY down after breakin.

Odie:
I agree with the "better seal" method of break-in, but I think it may have been used as a demo/fun-toy, so who knows......

Wyked:
I go by the manual which says:"ride for 10 mins...."
My ride takes 15mins(about 8 miles).

Jlnance:
positive thinking, need more of that!!!!

thanks,

I asked because there has been a few times after really hard riding the oil level seemed low, yet the next day when I checked after running up to get fuel(15-20mins) and another quart the level was right where it should have been.

My oil was about 1/2 quart low whike breaking in the bike. Don't worry its normal, just keep an eye on it.

This is normal...mine did the same...about 1/2 quart during the first 500 miles, about 1/4 quart during the next 2500, and pretty much none in the 6500 miles since.

remember to check the oil when hot. also dont worry too much about the consumption issue untill you have the motor broken in. you should be draining that oil about now anyway. be sure and fill the filter with oil prior to installation. enjoy the bike. dean

WoW, that takes a load off!!
Thanks for the info everybody.

I'm planning to change it tomorrow, actually.

I do check it when hot, and after I found it low, I checked it when cool also; same reading.

thanks again,

They gave me the wrong oil filter!!!!
I didnt realize this until I had the old one off(I know)

They put dino oil in all new bikes except one(cant remember name)which is shipped from the factory with synth.

If you run it hard enough it will consume some oil. I am talking about redline and back over and over again.

Mine will consume a couple of ounces on a very hard ride of a few hundred miles or so (much like racetrack miles). Less revs and a little easier and no consumption. The manual says 4 ounces from low to high operating range, so my guess is you were about 2-3 oz below the low mark. I don't think this is a big deal, but I always fill mine right away if it gets to that point (6 oz should fill it to the top).

Xbolt:
Whats redline??

honestly, since I've had the bike, It hasnt seen over 6k rpm; I always warm up @1min before take-off; and I try my best not to lug.

no leaks yet.(beatin' on big piece of wood)

thanks,
