So I rode a 88ci EFI XB12 a couple weeks back. It belongs to a friend of a friend. We were out for a ride I was on my 1125CR. I asked him what the power band was like on the bike. He was nice enough to swap bikes with me and let me check it out. I have to say the bike has a lot of personality, and the grin factor was huge. The power band seemed endless, bike was crazy fun. It made a lot of power as does my CR but it made it in a completely different way. So now I am kinda obsessed. I can't seem to stop thinking about that bike. The big bore kit really brought it to life. The guy said he built it pretty mild for street ability. But she was tons of fun. I put a big bore kit on my Electra glide and never regretted it. She runs like a champ. So now I am thinking about picking up a XB12R and putting a 88ci big bore kit on it. The bike I rode had an axtell kit on it, but I would probably go with a NRHS kit and support a fellow bad weather. Anyways coming to my point I know it's been done have read several threads on here about others here who have done the build. Does anyone own one what was their experience? do they have any advice? Roughly what was the cost? Looking to build something relatively mild very streetable. I realize that there faster bikes out there. For a lot less money, but I have to say the grin factor on this bike was literally off the charts. And to me that is priceless. (Message edited by Zhen13 on April 11, 2016) |

I don't think anyone had much success with XB engines+carbs. When they came out, people were kicking around the idea of using a downdraft or automotive carb. In the end, it's just more easy to teach the FI new tricks. |

That's 1450cc to you normal guys. All I know about going that big is the case will need some machining. I would go with an XB9 crank and blow the diameter up big, think you can hit 80ci like this. You might need bigger injectors to fuel it properly, and I'd change the pump to a fresh one to make sure it is up to the task. |

Cases have to be split to remove the guts and bore them out. The NRHS kit uses Zippers cylinders for iron-lined aluminum or Axtell fir cast iron, and their pistons set up for the build to match the headwork done, compression needed, cams, etc. You will want to send your manifold with the heads so it can be ported as well. Make sure to use an XB12 manifold (49mm ID vs XB9's 45mm ID). not many XB cam options for such a build. NRHS CAT3s would be a high torque grind, but low on top end for this size. Send stock cams to Redshift to get them welded and reground to .585s, or, a savvy person with resources can make new timing marks and timing cup notch on Sportstrr cams, like NRHS CAT4s, to fit XBs. I did this on one of my builds. That only works on 03-07 XBs though, as 08 up have different cam journals. If a pre-08, get the -07 oil pump as well, for the better scavenging. Don't use an 07 crank unless you have it rebuilt by Dark Horse, Hoban Brothers, etc. If you have money to burn, upgrade to the better 08-up crank, bolt, and rotor for the lighter, stronger rods and the 1.5" crank pin. As far as fueling, ideally you would want to upgrade to some Deka/Seimans 60# injectors and have the bike tuned accordingly. |

@Phelan Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. What would something like that run? 88" kit,crank, cam, oil pump, headwork assembly and tuning Ballpark? Is that something NRHS would be interested in? I'd bet you are looking at way over $5000.00, especially if you are having someone else build it, then you can probably double that for a turn-key motor build. |

Plan on $4000-4500+shopping each way. Dan doesn't do tuning on XBs, but Mike Cobb of Xopti Inside is excellent at tuning them, as is Jim Higgins of JT&S Performance. If Dan doesn't have a source for the 60# injectors, I do, just let me know. I'm not at NRHS anymore, but Dan can get you hooked up. I moved further south. Edit- if doing the 08 crank, rotor, and bolt setup on an 03-07 bike, add about $800 to my estimate. (Message edited by phelan on April 12, 2016) |

The 08-up bikes have the best oiling system, but the only cam option is Redshift. Unless you go with NRHS CAT3s, you're likely looking at Redshift cams anyway, so I wouldn't shy away from an 08-up motor. Plus they have the better crank already. Just know that you will also have to use an 08-up wiring harness and ECM. There's really no way to tune it effectively and efficiently without it being in an assembled bike. The injectors need the tables and/or AFV parameters scaled down due to their larger flow rates (about double stock), and then the tables need to be adjusted and scaled back up a hair and fine tuned according to the bikes needs. |

Have done a few 88 inch bikes with the higher pressure fuel regulator and added fuel with ECM-Spy. Worked well. |
