Hi Looking for input from any knowledgable people out there I was going to by an 06 xb12r but just saw a nice 08 up for sale in my area. It is of course almost 2000 more dollars. I know there are some engine differences but can anyone chime in on reliability/ longevity issues with the older 06? It's a big step up in money and I know it would be a better choice but not sure I can justify it. Both are in excellent shape Thanks for any help! | ||

The 08-up does have nice improvements for longevity, but an 06 doesn't have longevity issues either. My 06 Ulysses has almost 75,000 miles on it with no bottom end issues. Top end didn't have issues per se but I changed it and the cams for performance at 68,000 miles. | ||

Thanks for the advice Phelan- I plan on keeping the bike for a long time, this is the type of input I like to hear! Right now it's a question of affordability I just don't want to regret doing the wrong thing down the road. | ||

The 06 has 24000 miles so it would seem that as long as it was serviced it has many good miles left in it! | ||

There were a lot of changes "under the hood" between 06 and 08. Neither bike is bad, but as someone with an 08 and 06 I prefer the 08. Is the 08 worth 2 grand more? That is hard to say. | ||

I'd say that is right at the cutoff for the 08 improvements. In other words, either bike is a fair deal. Given how few bikes make it to 80k miles, and given the rate at which all motorcycles depreciate, I'd buy the cheaper one and take my chances. $2000 may be able to buy a complete replacement XB12 in 4 years. | ||

You can buy a complete replacement motor off eBay for the $2000 difference, or rebuild yours for even less, if you prefer. | ||

Thanks guys this is great input- had my heart set on the 08 but at this time it's too much coin. Nice to hear some good advice. The 06 might run strong no issues for 5 years; worry about it then right! Thanks again | ||

Make sure that routine service has been done to either bike. You could always try to lowball the 08 before making a final decision. | ||

Thrived the lowball- literally all I could spend but no luck- he is asking a fair price though. Both bikes are listed as mint and the guy with the 06 seems very meticulous and always uses the dealer for service. I've decided on the 06- I can use what I have left to change the bodywork to black- probably a plasti dip job. Now I have to try and find another buell race exhaust for sale!! | ||

Bought the 06- it runs perfect, is spotless and has new tires battery and brake pads- in much better shape than I was expecting! Thanks for the advice! | ||

Thanks! Unfortunately no I can't- we are in the middle of winter here but 2 months or so and I should be close to getting it out! Lots of work to do- I already have a stock pipe off my wife's, but our dollar is crap right now so no drummer! The cost of the pipe plus shipping both ways, taxes at the border etc would kill me; probably half what I paid for the bike! for now I am just going to look for a used slip on- I like the sound of the buell pro series race pipe best- I know it doesn't do much for performance but... | ||

None of the slip ons helps much with performance. On my built motor (104 RWHP, stock was 76 RWHP), I tuned and tested a stainless drummer slip on vs the stock muffler, and they performed nearly identically- almost the same curve, and within .01 HP of each other. |
