Hi all... New to Buells and belt drives, and just got my first, an 03 XB9R. It's a bit of a project and I'm having a few troubles, but I'll address that in a different post (one issue at a time, right?) Anyway, in doing some research I see that the 02-03 XBs have some kind of weaksauce belt and that it's a really common upgrade/mod to install 04+ pulleys and put an 06+ belt on for a lifetime of hassle-free service. This sounds like a worthy mod and I've been accumulating a few parts and pieces here and there to that end while I fix and rebuild the actual bike. I figure as long as things are all taken apart I may as well, right? I received a front pulley that is ostensibly from an 07 xb9r, and in comparing it to the original I've got on my 03, it's wider by a bit (which I kind of expected) but the diameter of that new front pulley is significantly wider. Is this to be expected? Phelan mentioned already (in another post, but I didn't want to hijack that post with questions so I'm reposting now) that it's not about the diameter, it's about the belt pitch. Fair enough answer, I suppose, but I just want to confirm that the diameter of the front pulley really is that much bigger. I hate to put things together and then find out I installed all kinds of wrong things. Advice is much appreciated! |

After gathering all the parts, I put another 03 belt on my bike. I think the problem is slightly overblown, and the newest revision of the belt is better than the original. |

We see the people that don't follow the proper procedures when changing there rear tire that have them break. The G0500.02A8R isn't a durable as the G0500.1AAH and cant be bent sideways or in a sharp radius in either direction. There is a kit #G1400.1AA that has all the parts in it that you need to do the conversion. Attached is the kit I-sheet that comes with the kit. |

The 03 belt is susceptible to improper handling prior and during installation (twisting and bending). Other than that, reverse loads associated with wheelies and hoolagnism aggravates it. I feel no personal need to change my setup and am unable to knee jerk recommend it to anyone else either. It's not a lifetime part as eluded to. I hope and would be happy to get 20 to 25 thousand miles from them as a wear item. |

No matter which belt you run, all it takes is one small rock and they are toast. |

I sell a pile of the G0500.028R belts, almost as many as the G0500.1AAH belts and it has only used for one full year. I would up grade when your budget allows you to, but do it the correct way with the correct parts so it works like it should. |

Barker has something like 70k miles on his 03 9R with the original belt, and he doesn't ride it gently. |

Lance, Is the G0500.02A8R kit still available? I'm considering picking up a clean 2003 XB9S, but I'd imagine it still has the original belt. Is there a way to easily tell the 03 belt from the others without doing a side by side comparison? I looked on the interwebs for a picture showing the difference, but no luck. |

The G0500.02A8R is still available and in stock. The belt should have a part number on it. If not look at the rear sprocket and if has a 72 tooth sprocket its a G0500.02A8R and the 65 is G0500.1AAH. I also have the last one of the belt conversion kits in stock. |

Thank you Lance. Any easy tell tale sign of the 65t vs 72t sprocket? Or do I just need to man up and count? How much are you asking for the kit vs the 03 belt? The bike I'm looking at only has about 11k miles, but who are we kidding... the belt icould be pushing 15 years old (in the desert!). I don't plan on hot dogging it, but a broken belt and a tow bill can put a damper on anyone's day. |

The sprockets are marked on the outside face with tooth count. |

Awesome thanks! How much is the conversion kit going for these days? The bike is pretty stock and looks unmodified, so I'm betting it's the original setup. While the bike is a good price, an additional $600-800 for the belt conversion may change the dynamics of the deal. Thanks Lance! |
