First real post - newbie here. First off, let me apologize for asking what I'm sure must be an obvious question. I have a 2003 XB9R with the original 11mm belt system. I have picked up a 14mm 65T rear pulley, another idler pulley (which i later found out is the same), a Free Spirits tensioner and am looking for a front pulley. For the life of me, I cannot find information on the interchangeability of front pulleys. I know by messing with the stock 14mm ratios, I am asking for trouble, but can one buy a lightweight front pulley to fit the XB9R? Should I buy the stock cast and mill it down? I have read posts for weeks trying to do some research here, and come to a conclusion. I see many references to the sportster pulleys working on a tuber, but no XB interchange. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

HD currently still makes the pulley for the Sportsters that fits our Buells. It's 27 tooth (I believe) and new is around $150.00. The Part number escapes me at the moment, but I've done the conversion and it's no big deal save for the fact that you need the 2004 and later belt guard. The pulleys are all the same (including the 1125 series, just the brackets are different. If you need further assistance, let me know. |

This is Buells 11mm to 14mm instruction sheet for the conversion they have for the 2003 models. it give you all the part numbers you need to do it. |

It sounds like you are looking for a lightweight replacement for the front pulley. Aluminum front pulleys will wear out in no time flat, so skip those in your search. Plus, the only size I've found in aluminum is the 26 tooth. The best bet IMO is to find an OEM 27 tooth pulley and send it to Free Spirits or someone similar that will drill the 8 holes in the mass and powdercoat it. That will drop the rotating mass a significant, but safe amount. I think Free Spirits does that on am exchange basis as well, so fast turnaround time. |

Phelan - Thank you, that is exactly what I was wondering. Has anyone ever had the front and/or the rear ever lightened? Did it make a difference or help? Being as we are in winter storage, now is the time to send this out. On another note, bought an Ohlins for the rear. Per my distributor - that I used to work for - there were only 3 left and they weren't making anymore. Sending the front out to RaceTech for the works. Any experience with them/that work? Maybe I should just start a new post...... |

I've never used them but they are well renouned in the Tuber world (RaceTech). I don't know that I've ever seen an XB rear pulley lightened but it is aluminum so the returns on it are minimal compared to the steel front pulley. Purpony makes custom XB rear pulleys that match the wheels but I don't know if they are lighter or not. And they aren't cheap either, at ~$600 IIRC. Free Spirits does have a cool highlight cut they will do to a rear pulley, also on an exchange basis, but I don't think the weight difference there would be more than a few ounces. The front pulley is a big deal, because it spins at over twice the speed of the rear pulley, which is also why it needs to be steel, for longevity. On the rear, tire carcasses and wear will make much more difference than rear pulley lightening ever will. |

Is the front pulley the same diameter as the original, just wider? I also have a 2003 XB9R and I'm accumulating parts to do the conversion to the 2006+ belt, and I acquired a front pulley that (supposedly) came from a 2007 XB9R. It's almost twice the diameter - or at least, seems that way. It's bigger than the original, not just wider. Is that correct? |

The pulley size doesn't matter in this case. Different belt pitch. |

All the XB use the same front and rear sprockets from 2004 thru 2010. The sprocket sizes did change after 2003 on both front and rear and once you change them both the ratio is pretty much them same. I posted the list of all the parts needed to do the conversion a few days ago to help with the conversion. Buell did make the conversion kit and they are still available and have all the correct parts in ice kit. |
