I have been trying to find some suitable replacement headlights for our XB9S project bike for a while, and have tried 3 different permutations without finding the look I was searching for. Well at last I've found it!

Fitted a set of LSL Mig headlights in polished aluminium today and it is transformed! Why don't they come with these fitted as standard?

Light intensity is 100% better than the stock headlights as well as looking (in my humble opinion of course) loads better. They attach to the fork legs by 2 slim steering damper clamps for an uncluttered look and are also available in black. Of course if anyone wants some....

Wonder if they could be fitted in plce of the stock Firebolt lights through the fairing...

You could probably fit them as the bolt pattern on the lights themselves is the same. You would end up throwing away most of the kit however.

I think on an R I would mount them to the outside under the bikini... I'd have to play around with them to be sure though. They do look good.

Hmm, I wonder if they could be *in addition to* the stock lamps. If the draw wouldn't be too much, of course. They look like they could be mounted below the lower brace without too much trouble.

the XB alternator cranks out 35 amps. it will run (4) 55 watt lamps easily.

Power (watts) equals volts times amps. So either one will getcha : )

So if it is a 35 amp alternator, the XB generates 35*12 = 420 watts.

Also note that watts are a measure of power consumed by the bulb, not brightness of the particular light. HID's, flourescents, LED's, all produce FAR more light for watt consumed then filament bulbs, and produce far much less heat. The power being used by a bulb is either being emitted as light, or emitted as heat.

Its a good trick if you have a small fixture somewhere in your house, but never seem to get enough light out of them. The fixtures are rated in terms of the waste heat output by bulb. A 35 watt or so compact floruescent bulb will output nearly as much light as a 100 watt normal bulb. So if you have a bathroom fixture that is rated for a max of 3 60 watt bulbs (180 watts total) you can slap in 3 of the 35 watt compact flouresenct bulbx (as bright as if you had 300 watts of filiment bulbs) and they will still run much cooler and last longer, all while putting out like twice as much light.

I don't know why I just typed all that.

But why stop now? I did some back of the envelop calculations about making an LED headlight. It was ugly, it was going to require like $1000 worth of LEDs to duplicate a bright halogen. That was a couple years ago, and LEDS are getting brighter and cheaper, but I bet you are still looking at a $500 bulb. It would look uber cool though...

I think the final size was fine, within the normal bounds of a headlight. And it would run a heck of a lot cooler, and require a lot less power, so the packaging could be very innovative.

I oughta re-do the calculations. It has been a couple years, and high end LEDS have gotten tons brighter and lots cheaper. They do age though, don't know what their lifespan would be.
