Ok I just picked up an 08 xb12stt with 5500 miles on it and it will not idle when the engine is cold (as in first start of the day or after a couple hour cool down). I have done the tps reset which almost seems to have made it worse. I've also cleaned the throttle body and pulled some codes that were stored in the history (no engine light on so notcurrent) codes were: 21, 15, 11, and 44. The bike is bone stock in every way. What further steps do i need to take to diagnose this? Is there a program that will allow me to access ecm data? The bike just acts loke its lean when cold. Any help would be very much appreciated. |

I don't have a reference for the codes but checking for vacuum leaks at the intake manifold/head connections would be another good step. Vacuum leaks would make the engine idle lousy especially when cold. Another thought is the Idle Air Valve (IAV) may be sticking or faulty and not opening adequately when the engine is cold to keep it running. The IAV is mounted to the side of the throttle body; you could remove it and clean by spraying throttle body cleaner through the air openings. You may even be able to clean it without removing it from the throttle body. |

Thanks for the suggestions. Checked for vacuum leaks, had none. Pulled the idle air valve and cleaned but, i highly doubt that done anything because it was very clean already. I'Ve read about ecm issues causing these symptoms something about it being cracked. Does this sound right? How do i check for this crack or avoid the crack? |

21 is the Interactive Exhaust Valve, either it is stuck open/closed or has failed in some other way. 15 is the Air Intake Temperature sensor voltage is too high or low 11 is Throttle Position Sensor voltage too high or low 44 is Bank Angle Sensor voltage too high or low. The odds of all those sensors failing at the same time is slim, and given that they are historic codes leads me to think it may have been related to a weak battery but has sense cleared up. It may be related to the fuel and idle mapping in your stock ECM, early 08s had issues with less than stellar programming which caused some running and idle issues. If that is the case here, it is fixed either by buying a Race ECM (recommended regardless of the issue), or by having a dealer reflash the ECM to update the programming. |

Well since this is vin number 00001 for 2008 i would say its an early build. Where can i source an ecm? |

I have been struggling wit the same issue on my XT. I have replaced most all of the sensors including the CPS. Installed a new IAC. Cleaned and checked grounds. Replaced the intake seals. It does the same with the stock ECM and my EBR race unit. I am getting no codes. It will not idle when cold but runs and idles fine once warm. I would be interested in a solution. |

Ian03xl - http://idspd.com/xcart/buell-XB12-08-09-non-cat-ec m.html Are you sure your bike is an 08? Your profile says 07, which uses an entirely different fuel injection system, and that ECM is not compatible. |

Froggy Yes just picked this one up my 07 runs flawlessly. Certainly there is an engine temp sensor that tells the ecm its cold right? Is there a program or some way for me to access the ecm data so know what the ecm is seeing when its cold? |

Well, i think its fixed. I took froggys advice and brought it to the dealer to check for an update. Reluctantly they checked it for me and low and behold it needed an update. Did the update, haven't had an issue since it also changed the fan logic so i'm guessing the p/o just put up with this since new, sad really because its that much better in every way. So thanks froggy for the tip. |
