I continue to struggle with diagnosing and fixing my 04 XB12R. I have had a continual problem over the past few summers in that the bike will randomly stop running smooth and will start missing/skipping and overall running really bad. I typically reset the TPS and all is well again. This time around, the TPS reset did not work. I replaced the spark plugs and no change. I replaced the TPS and no change. There are no historic trouble codes. It seems to idle reasonably well but when I get on the throttle is starts stumbling from 2k on up. The exhaust temp seems equal on both sides and the bike does get up to temp based on feel. Before bringing it to Harley for a look (they are weeks out so my summer riding is basically done this year) are there any thoughts or other diagnostic work I can do? I have the CMI Lite to read trouble codes and reset the TPS but that is all I have. I don't want to just randomly start replacing parts to see what might work but not sure what else to do unless I bring it into the shop. I am in the Denver area if anyone knows of any shops that can help that are not just Harley shops as they don't really work on Buells anymore. Thanks

Dale

What have you done further with it qua tuning and maintenance?
Are the intake manifold gaskets in good shape? (not leaking)

Could be running rich due air filter or O2 sensor.

Might do to start looking at the Eng Temp Sensor and its wiring. Crappy running after it gets warm may be a clue. They can 'shift calibration' without showing a trouble code. Based on my X-1 service manual, the ETS is a rather crude sensor, and I'm not aware of a good way to check them for function, other than pass/fail, which should show a code. . .

Hope this helps, Dave

Thanks for the advice but I think I am sending it into Harley for a diagnostic. No trouble codes on the bike. It runs like crap when it is cold as well as warm. It does idle cleanly anymore and just hesitates and stumbles all over. The bike is well maintained so I can't point to obvious issues that aren't being handled. New spark plugs and a new throttle position sensor as well as resetting the TPS several times has not cleaned it up.

Cam/crank position sensor failing when it gets hot is my guess, need a cheap oscilloscope to verify this. I would star by buying a programming cable and get a copy of ecmspy so you can check a few other things, it will read out the head temp. so can help trouble shoot that problem. Just need a Windows computer along with the cable.

While it's running crappy you can put a timing light on it to see if it's got good spark or not. If you have a bad coil or other ignition problem it won't throw a trouble code. Try testing everything you can before taking in to a shop. ecmspy or ecmdroid would help too.
