I rode my 2003 xb9r today on the way home from work. I took the long way home and the bike ran great. When I got home I washed and waxed it. About three hours later I started the bike, rode down to the end of the block, pulled out onto the road and the bike hiccuped, and made a bang. The bike shut off, I coasted to the side of the road, put it in neutral, the engine primed, I hit the start button and all it does is go clunk from the starter. Only will do it once, as if the motor won't turn over. Any idea as to what happened? |

Ground point for the battery came apart? Maybe ground cable failure at the crimps? |

Talked to my friend that is a Buell mechanic and he said to put the bike in 5th gear and try to roll the bike. Well, did that and the bike didn't roll. So something is bad internally. I have a set of black xb wheels for sale in the classifieds, someone buy them to help cover the cost of this fix lol |

Didn't roll at all or just hard to roll? It's still damn hard to turn the wheel against the compression on my 03 9R with 1050cc kit, so I wouldn't use that test as a catch all of "something's bad internally". Even before I rebuild the top end and there was scored cylinders and out of round problems, mine still did not rotate easily until the spark plugs were removed. Pull the plugs and try again, better would be to put it on a swingarm stand and rotate the wheel by hand so you can listen to the motor. Make sure to turn the ignition off or unplug the fuel pump! Don't want all that fuel running down into the oil! (Message edited by greg_e on April 12, 2015) |

Jon, my mechanic is going to look at it this week. I'll keep everyone posted so next time this happens to someone we can chime in with the possible fix. |

Update from my mechanic today. He pulled the primary cover off and everything was fine. He pulled the clutch basket out and everything was good. He is going to pull the plugs and see what's going on in the top end. He thinks now it may have dropped a rod. Could this be serious damage? Would it be more cost effective to just buy a used motor? If anyone has a used 03-06 xb9 motor post it here. I have about a $1200 budget so worst comes to worst, I may have to just cut the cord and part it out. Being in college sucks... |

Get a decent motor for transplant. If you were doing all the work, I might have a different answer. But you can't get a good engine rebuilt for what you have available. The labor alone is going to eat most of that. The crank would probably need work unless it was new, could probably use cylinder honing and new rings. Probably glass bead the heads to clean them up, might as well do a valve job. You see where I'm going. Find a salvaged 03 and get the motor, stick two new engine mounts on it, install and hope for the best. (Message edited by greg_e on April 22, 2015) |
