I feel like I’m on the trail of this problem but I don’t have it yet. It all started when the speedo on my xb9s became erratic. It would read 20-30 mph on the freeway and on the street the needle would go up to 20 mph and then fall back even as I was accelerating. Everything else worked fine. Both needles swept the dial when the key was turned on. The odo, trip odo, tach, clock. . . all were fine. After scanning many post here I decided the speed sensor might be the problem. I’m fortunate enough to also have an xb12s (I love Buells!) so I swapped that sensor over. No change. Same exact symptoms. So I figured the unit itself was shot. But before forking over $$$s I swapped the instrument unit over from the XB12s. Same exact symptoms! BTW, the speedo on the xb12s works fine when it’s on that bike. So, today I poured over more posts and decided to track the wires from the speed sensor up to the instrument unit plug-in. For WHITE, the ohmeter needle slammed over. Continuity. Same for black/white (ground?) Continuity. Then things got weird. The third wire coming from the speed sensor is red, and it plugs into a RED wire on the connector. But when I got up to the plug-in for the instrument unit, the red wire goes into a “blank” hole? There is no contact strip inside. The only wire close to red that had a “live” connector was pink-ish and when I plugged into that the ohmmeter needle went about half way. As I rechecked the Buell shop manual I saw mention of a green/yellow wire so I plugged into that one. The needle moved about ¼” and stayed there. . . So that’s where I sit, baffled! Have you checked and cleaned your grounds? There also could be some pinched or chaffed wiring by the steering neck that may be causing you trouble. |
