Hey guys. Is there any decent options to gain some leg room on my '06 Lightning SS? I have a 38" inseam and my knees are folded up pretty tight. That gets uncomfortable fairly quick. I see there are lowering pegs available--anyone ever used them? I really wish I'd have never sold my Uly. That bike was the most comfortable street bike I have ever ridden. Thanks. | ||

The stock pegs are 1" drop, you can get 2" drop pegs from Knight Designs, that would be the cheapest and easiest route. If you need more room, you can swap on the Ulysses footpeg mounts. It will be a little more expensive as you will need to swap the rear brake line, in addition to getting some different parts for the shift linkage. Oh and the peg mounts too obviously. | ||

Is the Super TT seat thicker than the standard XB12SS seat? | ||

Bar risers will open up your riding position as well, which makes it feel less cramped. | ||

It has been a while since I had the STT seat, if I remember right the sitting on it thickness was about the same as the stock SS seat, as the STT seat lets you sink into it more. | ||

Reep- It's not so much the reach to the bars that's my issue, it's the tight knee bend. I did however bolt on stock 2000 M2 Cyclone bars that were left over from my old bike. Froggy- Thanks again. I ordered a set of the Knight 2" drop pegs you suggested. Anxious to see if they help. | ||

if you want more ground clearance i will trade you my xt forks and rear shock for yours will and pegs for that matter. | ||

That sounds like a good idea, 701_xb12xt. Would anything else need to be changed like the triple clamps or the belt tensioner? | ||

Forks, shock, and kickstand. Everything else is the same, plug and play. | ||

Hey- I want in on this too. Bruce gets my X suspension, Darwin gets Bruce's SS suspension, and I get Darwin's XT suspension. Win-win-win. If we timed it right, we probably wouldn't even lose a weekend of riding. | ||

Hughlysses, I did a little research last evening and came up with those same specs--that does seem odd on the SS and XT rear. A few more questions: Are your forks and shock in nice condition both mechanically and cosmetically? I will need a Uly front brake hose, correct? Would you consider trading your Uly foot peg mount bracket assemblies? That would make this swap absolutely perfect for me as my leg room would be there. Buell went to a larger diameter on the forks, didn't they? What year was that? If I go with Uly peg brackets, I'll need a Uly rear brake hose, correct? I think that's about it.  | ||

Hugh, just because a shock is physically longer doesn't necessarily mean it has more travel. | ||

Bruce- My forks and shock are in good condition. I have several VERY small rust pits in the left hand fork leg. I just changed the fork oil (Amsoil 10W) a couple of weeks ago and polished the areas using 1000 grit sandpaper, filled them in with paint (Buell frame paint that I had handy), and polished the painted surface level. The seals were replaced on both forks ~2 years ago. Bushings were still in excellent condition at that time. The forks have a little over 50k miles on them. I need to look in the parts book and see if there are different brake hoses for each model. I would not want to trade footpeg brackets. Fork leg size changed in 2008, but even then the fork legs are all the same size where they pass through the triple clamps. Froggy- so you're suggesting the Ss shock is shorter overall yet has more travel than the XT shock? I suppose that is possible, but it does seem odd. | ||

my xt is also not a 09 its an 08 if that makes any difference or not. | ||

They are different, but going from SS to XT height or vice versa shouldn't be an issues as it isn't a huge jump, but the X may need the hose swap. | ||

Hughlysses--Man, I'm sorry bro but I don't think I want to go with your stuff. My forks and shock are pristine and the bike as a whole is in excellent cosmetic condition--I'm pretty anal about that kind of thing. I'm just gonna go with 701s XT stuff. Hope your not pissed at me.  | ||

Bruce- That's cool; I totally understand. That's why I wanted to be very clear that my forks are good, but not by any means pristine. I priced out new XT suspension components and kick stand a few years ago; they totalled right at $1k back then. Every time I make a long trip on the bike, I start thinking about the XT suspension swap again. I guess I need to get more diligent about watching ebay. |
