Hey everyone, I have a 2006 Uly and have a modified drummer exhaust on it's way back to me. I was told by Drummer that I need to remove the cable entirely. I have the cable off of the muffler(naturally since it's already sent out) but where does the other end of the cable connect? Just curious what I need to do if it's taking the cable loose or do I need to disable something on top of that or what? I'm having a 2 section spinal fusion in a couple of weeks so I'm trying to wrap up all of my projects because I don't know how long it will be until I can lay down on a garage floor again. lol. Honestly I'm going to miss that for a while. Any advice on what I need to do would be greatly appreciated. |

Believe me , laying down is the easiest thing to do after a fusion! did that in 06, off work 5 1/2 months, back brace etc. Only creature in the house that put up with me was a 9 lb. rabbit. We did have a good time tho. anyhow, cable ends on top of your air box at actuator. disconnect and run out of frame. roll up and hang on garage wall next to old triumph cables for memorabilia. Some may say wrong, but I have stock muffler, valve welded open , and no cable. turned off muffler actuator in ecm spy and all is well with the world. Seriously, let me know how you are doing during the fusion and surgery and aftermath as I may be able to help keep your sanity about you. It is not easy at times. These guys think the cold weather is a bitch to get thru. They know nothing of what a 7 plus hour surgery is for a person and family! Take care and good luck! |

thanks Sage. I did the pre-op work yesterday and the reality of all this hit me like a brick in the face. I don't want to come off as a big sissy but I'm scared to death. |

I think the hardest part of removing the cable is trying to pull it out of the frame. It kind of follows all the other wires and stuff that run down the left rear corner of the frame behind the engine. Plus, I think there's a tie wrap or two that hold the bundles together. Well, you'll find out when you get there. How far up is the fusion? I had L5-S1 fused just over a year ago, feels great now. Most of my rehab exercises involved laying on the floor so I don't think that will be a problem. Everything held together by titanium plate and screws, not going anywhere. They just don't want you to twist or lift anything heavy for a while. Luckily my company was very understanding, they let me come back to work after two and a half months with doctors approval and weight limit. Had the weight limit increased over time and was restriction free after about seven months. Before the operation I had pressured my doctor about complications and everything he had to do during surgery. He was very confident and was able to explain everything. Put me right at ease. I'm sure you'll be fine, keep a positive outlook and remember that we're here for you. Oh, the day of when going through all the prep work, I asked the doctor if he had a Starbucks double shot expresso or a Red Bull for breakfast. He said no, not on operation day. |

thanks y'all. I'm even worried about being able to still ride a m/c. Your posts have helped put me at ease a little in that regard. I'm just a bit worried about handling a large, tall and heavy bike like the Uly. |

If anything you should be better on the bike after wards once you get some PT out of the way. My operation was Oct. 1 and the doc let me get back on the Uly mid Nov, as long as I promised not to meet him in the ER anytime soon. |

Griff.....did you feel like you were ok "structurally" to handle the bike? I'm a bit worried about handling such a heavy/big bike? My fusion is going to be L3-L4-L5. My l4-5 surgery was a few years back and my L3-4 surgery was August '14. I got a little relief but in December my mother in law broke her femur while walking in her house. I tried to get her up off the floor. I knew it when I did it that my back was smashed up again but I had to do it. I'm going to follow the doc's directions and I'm just going to have to be more careful about how I do things. This has been on going for so many years that quite honestly it's just become a part of life. I just hope I can get back to the point where the first thing I talk about with my in the morning is how my back is today. I'm 42 next week and hope I can get over this. |

40 frigging 2?? Really??? just kidding!!!!!!! My doctor asked me if it was ok for students to come in and witness the surgery. I said no way. he was to bring his game face and be on top of his game for that one day. he was pretty much a di k the whole time with attitude. That was the only real time I told him how his behaviour was going to be. He got quiet and said ok. Seriousness was not really in his doctors bag. anyhow, when is surgery scheduled? Let us know! |

If your referring to the active muffler control cable I removed mine on my lightning and it was kind of a pain. If you do decide to remove the cable be sure to leave the servo motor electrical connections hooked up under the air box cover(tank) or it will throw a CEL or if you have a ECMspy cable you can disable it and remove the servo motor completely. |

Lee, I had no problem handling the bike, but I did get permission from the doc first. Everyone's case is a little different, since mine was L5S1 that meant that I didn't lose range of motion, plus the titanium plate is stronger than bone and the screws proved to be secure after a few x-rays. The doc even said that I could pick up anything I wanted to but not on a regular basis, thus the weight limit. Yeah, listen to the doc and your body. At 42 you should be able to get through this. Good luck. |

just thought I would post an update. My surgery was a complete nightmare. The doc is closer to a butcher than MD. They disabled my power generation unit(pacemaker) without asking, caused a spinal fluid leak which required laying in bed with ZERO movement for 2 days and there's a few other things. I ended up getting set to another inpatient rehab facility because I felt as if I didn't get out of the first one that they were literally going to kill me there. Good news is I'm up an walking with a walker most times and every once in a while without. My right leg has lots of nerve damage and is significiantly weaker. I still have a ton of exercise/rehab to get back on track but I'm going to do it. Once I do feel better I'm finding the best malpractice doctor I can find. |

Leeinmemphis: sure sorry to hear that. I been wondering how everything has been going for you. Now I know. did the surgery go thru the front as well as back? That sometimes creates issues of its own. I wish you the best and give a holler here often if you like . |

Ouch, leaking spinal fluid AND nerve damage? I hope they have a good explanation. Do what you need to heal up, hopefully it's only some temporary inflammation causing most of the trouble. Keep us updated and feel better soon. |

Sage it was all done in the back. Griff...yeah I ended up getting transferred to a rehab facility. I literally feared if I stayed in that hospital that I was going to die. Spinal fluid is something I pray I never have to endure again.I can't explain how EXCRUTIATING the pain was. Hopefully the nerve pain will lighten up on me. The weakness and motor control issues with my right foot though I fear are going to be permanent. I can still do most everything. I just have to try a little harder and concentrate a bit more. |
