Maybe replace the two bosses with wide base conical ones? Although, if you don't use your rear brake much, the risk is decreased. Is the swingarm solid there or hollow? |

The question is, how successful do you think you might be is flinging some steel shot out of your sandblaster, and what size shot should you use? Airgun BB's are easy enough to get, but might be a bit big and do too much work at each spot. Duck hunting might provide a smaller choice, most of that is mild steel and probably down in much smaller diameters. http://www.shotgunworld.com/ammo_s082000.html Looks like 0.100 inch is the smallest, might still be too big. |

There is more to shot peening than you would expect, that I do not have the training or experience to describe. Perhaps Blake can speak on it. |

Truckinduc, Mainly the mounting bosses to swingarm welded joints, but also the swingarm in general. Only some aluminum alloys will gain strength with age, the 6000 series including 6061 is one of them. I don't work with cast alloys enough to recall if the 300 series (I think that's what comprises the swingarm) age hardens or not. I think it does, so your point is probably a good one relative to the parent metal. However, the filler metal is the likely weak link. You using 4943? Residual tension stress in the weld can be a real problem accelerating fatigue crack initiation. Shot peaning puts residual compressive stress at the surface, which acts to retard fatigue crack initiation. Gussets are good too! |

I've been reading up on shot peening... The likely hood of doing it at home is only OK. You'll probably only get about 50 percent there which will be better than nothing, but the setup will cost a bunch. Wondering how much it would cost to have the whole swingarm done, or at least all the welded and filled areas. If I was going to try to devise a home system, I think I would build it around a high pressure washer and grit blasting attachment. Getting the power behind the little spheres is the hard part, need to impart a certain energy for each material being blasted. I think getting that energy would be easier with water behind it and maybe slightly larger spheres. I read that typical shot size is 0.032 inches or smaller, not a lot of mass. The few people who built their own rig found it takes monumental amounts of air to move them to the point where they can do the work. The test strips can be purchased, as can the shot. Propelling the shot and refining the process is the hardest part, and I think water might help provide the force needed. |

Blake, thanks for the info. The brace and caliper bosses are indeed 6061 and I'm using 4043 filler. I'll be adding a gusset to the caliper mounts that will add around 6" more weld to the swingarm itself. It could fail the first Time I ride it, 6 years down the road, or never. If this were a production part I would take every necessary step to ensure its strength. Shot peening with a pressure washer sure is an interesting concept. I would think some sort of gravity feed or siphon setup would be the first challenge. I doubt a pump would put up with shot in the water. |

The good abrasive adapters have a gravity feed hopper. I did find one reference to a company that does shot peening with a water flow, so it probably works but might be pretty specific for target material. The water would cause more energy to transfer, but it would also remove the heat from impact which might be a problem. |

Started on my footpegs. Not sure if I'll knurl them or mill some grip slots in them. Also I'm using some nice 12 point arp bolts, even though you won't be able to see them.

I like how knurling looks. Trouble is last pegs I knurled I wasn't happy with the grip they provided. |

You aren't gonna get boot-shredding grip with a round peg. How about welding some material on to them so you can machine out some 'dirt bike peg' spikes ? or at least improve the land/sea ratio with out going thru the wall thickness. It might be easiest to emulate/take ideas from something that is allready on the market/you've seen on a motoGP bike I do like the look of the round pegs on a nimble street bike ... |

I'll use a .062" ball mill and put some groves in each direction on the pegs. |

Got a cheap little gauge. Wish it was smaller but it fits relativly well. Not sure how I'll mount it yet, probably right infront of the triple.

I'm going to be taking a break from this bike for a while. Frankly I'm burnt out on it right know and I've got too many other, more important projects going on. Mainly building my house and finishing my garage. It may be three weeks, or three months, not really sure. I will get back to it and it will get finished. |

Sorry to hear of the break, this build so far has been excellent, I don't comment much in the BW community but this build, the comments and your vision has been a blast so far,,,, Nicest damn XB swingarm I ever saw,, kudos mate! |
