I would have thought that you would have to check the timing with a degree wheel and dial indicator to know they were wrong? Also, if they have been fine, how would they get out of time? |

It needed rings and while the motor was out it was tipped over slightly while on the engine stand just enough for the 2 front cylinder cam gears to fall out. When I went to pull the cover back off after putting the gears back in, which they weren't in correctly, I didn't release the pressure on the cylinders and the cams came out with the cover?!?! I think I've found some good pics of how it all needs to go together but curious if there are any tricks to keeps all the gears in place while putting the front intake cam gear in? |

It's in the service manual. From memory, you put the crank at TDC, then line up the stamped in lines of each cam with the stamped lines on each other cam. They will only line up one way when you do that, and that is the right way. |

This is from my 2003 manual. Also note it says that the cams are marked as follows: 1E front exhaust 2E front intake 3E rear intake 4E rear exhaust http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/Greg_E/XB9R /IMG_20140904_220515_zpsijltccxh.jpg |
