Comes on irregularly, not always with a drop in performance, occasional rough idle. Is there a scanner to plug into this? I don't have the shop manual, but would rather avoid harley service. Local dealer has not been too competent in the past. 26k on the clock. Thanks, Chuck |

No fancy scanner needed to get the codes, but I do recommend getting your hands on a ECMspy cable and a copy of TunerPro RT anyway. Follow this procedure to check the codes without software, the plug is somewhere under the seat - http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=142838&post=2360318#POST2360318 |

Thanks for the tip. I got 6 flashes, then a two second pause, then 7 flashes. On closer look, it was 1 flash then 6. Battery voltage. Ran a meter on it, showed 12.34v. Little low. Ran it, voltage at fast idle 14.0v. Pulled battery out, cleaned up terminals, showed 12.57. Not a huge difference, tho it also really needs an air cleaner. The battery is less than a year old, but getting baked on the morning commute on the 5. May be premature death? |

12.57 is not good unless you have a lot of accessories. The battery is just a storage device, the alternator is supposed to handle the load and replenish the battery at the same time. Also, codes are generated in the ECM so there's always the possibility that it's not reading true battery voltage because of a harness problem. BUT, you did still measure less than 14 VDC at the battery with the engine running so you may want to do the basic charging system checks first. |

You can also get codes specifically for battery undervoltage or overvoltage. In the overvoltage situation you might be going through headlamps quicker than normal (because they're blowing out from overvoltage). This is an indication of a bad voltage regulator. |

So far, voltage is 14 at charging. Seems ok, possibly a artery going bad. I have 2 street bikes so until I get to harley and exchange, I will be OK. Maybe a good omen to be warned before battery dies... |
