Hi all,

2007 XB9R. My buddy installed a new fuel pump, fuel filter and sock (I used the DIY fix found here; http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Buell-Firebo lt-XB12-XB9/DIY-Fuel-pump-fix.-Cheaper-than-replac ement-from-HD )

He also put in new spark plugs. They were the NGK iridiums and they were not gapped upon installation, they are running on factory gap. The issue I'm having: bike will not run/idle without the AFV set to 140+. TPS reset does not help- TPS voltage is smooth and consistent when pulling on throttle. I also have to set my TPS and idle adjustment a bit higher than normal for the bike to idle above 1000rpm.

While the bike does run with the AFV set to 140, low end grunt as well as power between 3800-4500rpm is weak. The bike also bogs down/hesitates at 4000-4600rpm, it won't run smooth at all in this range. It will actually jerk me around.

Problems occurred immediately after the fuel pump/oil/sparkplug change. Initially I thought the O2 sensor may be going wacky- so I disabled the O2 in ECM spy, then set the afv at 100 and performed another TPS reset. Bike still would not idle.

I am wondering if something post-pump install clogged the injectors, or if the airtex pump that was installed is causing issues. My buddy swears the pump that we installed is not the problem, he said the airtex pump spec sheet claims it can push 90psi. I know the walbro pushes something around 45-50psi. Could this be an issue?

I run race maps since I have the drummer and K&N. Burning the stock maps back on makes the bike run even worse.

I am also looking for the fuel injector part #'s, if anyone knows what will work that would be much appreciated!

What are your thoughts guys?

At times, when riding hard, this CEL pops up but then goes away:

Bit 3: Trouble Code 13, O2 Sensor always lean

Always lean trouble code? Needs AVF at 140 to run? Just replaced the fuel pump? I would start by verifying the fuel pressure.

Yeah I am trying myself to gear up a Fuel Gauge that I can mount up around the bars so I can check pressure at all times...Have similar problems as well after installing a new pump and filter..sucks.

Hope ya get yours worked out..When I get this one fix will post and hope u do the same.....

Thanks

Did you get the filter in the correct direction?

After I replaced my pump and filters my AFV went down.

I really like this forum, thank you guys for the support! One of the other communities I typically post in have not been very helpful. You guys rock.

@Hogs

I'll definitely let you know! I tried to get some guidance from this other forum but everyone seemed to think that this was all due to a faulty O2. But the troubleshooting I've done all points to something in fuel delivery.

@Greg_e

Honestly, that is a huge possibility! We were trying to be careful assembling everything properly but we did take a lot of breaks. Possible we mounted the can the opposite way. I suppose my next plan of action is to disassemble the ol' girl again and take a look at what the hell happened. I'll let you all know what I find. If anyone has any other suggestions or wants me to do some other type of diagnostic that would be much appreciated.

For what its worth the fuel pump stays on consistently, you woudl'nt see a pressure drop except for A)Running out of fuel B)Losing voltage to the pump

I did the DIY for my bike in the beginning of the summer and I have had zero of these issues you or Hogs are having, Im with Greg something must be up with installation....obviously test pressure before yanking it out of there but I would suspect if the sock is on wrong you still may be able to get enough fuel into the pump for the pressure but the pump would sound different working its butt off to pull the fuel through.

The prefilter sock is also suspect. When I did this rebuild I could not find a sock that I thought would work, so I ordered one from American Sport Bike so I knew it would be correct. And if the high pressure side filter is backwards, it might come up to pressure at idle, but not supply enough when the volume goes up. There was something about the high pressure filter when I did mine, don't remember the specific issue, but I remember it was different from stock. Make sure the flow arrow points flowing out of the assembly towards the injectors. I think I had to mess with the bracket a bit to make it fit compared to stock.

It's also possible that you have some bad parts, I'd toss the high pressure filter and replace it if you are going back in again, cheap prevention. Might almost be worth exchanging the pump, they have a long warranty and you might just have gotten a bad one.

Not sure how to test the pressure regulator. It's a bypass design so it might have failed open, but I would expect low pressure or not running at all if it failed open. If it failed closed you would have really high pressure and AFV would be at the low end.

If you open it again, make sure one of the flexible lines didn't get crimped or get a small hole.

did anyone find a solution for this. my bike was running fine then went super rich and now will not stay running unless the afv is set to 150 wont even fire at anything less than 130 once it gets up to temp the bike wont start untill it cools back down again
