Bad ground at the headstock?

You are losing a grounding connection. When you place tension on the clutch cable, it gains electrical continuity (tightens the connection between the handlebars and the engine case) and acts as a ground. Check the wiring/grounding behind the headlight housing and check for broken wiring in the harness at the headstock.

Eh if im correct ,the early xb's have no ground wire on the headstock!

mine did not have it ,only a ground wire from the turn signal relay to the front module.

Some corrosion in the connectors or in the switch gear can also give this kind of problems ,check all and spray them with some contact cleaner.

My 2003 R has the grounds for headlight, dash, and ecm at a screw on the headstock so I know that hole is there. Don't know if they use it, but seems like the headlights should at least be grounded there.
