Hello, I own a 2009 XB12R, but I want a Lightning. I used to have a 2007 XB9SX, and now I'm missing the comfort and looks in a bad way. As you all know, there aren't many '09 or newer Lightnings for sale, especially in great condition with low miles. I'm not really interested in the Lightning Long, and I prefer the black forks and engine cases of the 09-10 bikes. I have my eye on a 2009 XB9SX, but I prefer the 12 engine for the street. I've been thinking about buying the SX and swapping some parts with my Firebolt to get a XB12S for the street and a XB9R for a track bike. Of the following two scenarios, which would make the most sense? 1. Swap the engines/exhaust/ECM. I imagine this would be quite an undertaking, but with adequate wrenching skills and the necessary manuals could be done. 2. Swap the fronts/tails and wiring harness. This seems more complicated to me, but it's probably only because I'm more mechanically minded than electrically. Any advice? |

You could always get the 9sx and make it a 1050 or something. A lot less work, a little more money, and you have all the fun of a revvy 9 motor with the power of a 12. |

swap body parts to keep the VIN matching the engine ? it would seem easier to me to swap body parts... unless you have a large shop and 2 bike lifts and 2 engine stands. |

*given that the wiring harness isnt too hard to yank out and then lace into the other bike |

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't even think about the VINs. That would hurt resale value, should I ever need to sell. I was under the impression that it was a real pain to relocate the Firebolt electrics from the fairing. I guess not as bad as dropping and reinstalling two engines though. One more thought: Did the wiring harnesses change much between 05-08? Could I buy a Lightning tail, front, and harness and just convert my Firebolt? |

If you get a lightning harness it will relocate a handful of components that were previously behind the head light...There are folks who have done iterations of each mod as you've mentioned the biggest problem seems to be sourcing parts |
