Just installed an EBR ECM on my 2008 XB12SCG and love it. Can I hook up and use ECM SPY to just read data and NOT make any inputs? Or will just hooking up ECMSPY corrupt the EBR ECM? Thanks. |

Got similar questions...Not sure though one can use ECmspy on 2008 and newer model years though...as they have different ecms than the 2007 and older ones... |

Tunerpro RT has the DDFI3 plug in, which I believe would suit your needs...and its free, Xoptiinside.com has a link to a download and has a couple user manuals for tuning the buells with tunerpro. |

Thanks for the reply Dwilson. Still does not answer my original question regarding ECMSPY. I do NOT want to make any changes nor do any tuning mods to the EEPROM/FUEL MAPS on my new EBR ECM. I just want to periodically hook it up to SPY, DOWNLOAD info and check on the AFV, TPS, TEMPS and BATT VOLTAGE etc. Will doing this in any way possibly corrupt the EBR ECM. **** I have already done it once after the initial 75 mile break in of the EBR ECM and I in fact could download and read the current live data. I am just trying to see if anyone else out there is doing the same and has been doing so for a length of time. And has NOT had any issues in damaging the EBR ECM. Thanks. |

With the caveat that I have not personally done that, I can't see what harm could be done by simply reading the information from the ECM. As long as you don't write any information too the ECM by doing a TPS reset, AFV reset, resetting error codes, or changing any tables, it's hard for me to see any harm. Then again, sometimes technology sneaks in things you don't really expect. I don't think ECMspy was designed for that kind of sneak feature though. |

Ive read that certain ebr ecmspy wont even let you look. At them without trouble...some cache for the inquiries or something...it was 2 models maybe? There is ecm spy for your year and ecm certainly can be read...but it might be much safer to use tuners...one bad click could bite you...I dont know that you will find a definite it's safe not safe answer. |

It is not compatible, memory locations are different, not everything you are seeing is correct. |

Thanks Froggy. But I have to admit that going through your posts regarding anything that has to do with ECMSPY, you do appear to have a bit of biasness towards the program in general. Definitely are folks here that prefer Tuner Pro over ECMSPY and have negative comments/feelings towards ECMSPY. BTW, Tuner Pro does not allow for an AFV reset back to 100% on 08 plus Buell's. Why is that? |

Never having dealing with the ddfi3 plugin I wont lie I've got no idea how that can even be possible? You manually enter the data you want in the ddfi2 setup. I'm relatively new to ecm tuning on these bikes but the consensus especially with ebr ecms is the way ECMspy was written has a few hiccups as far as programming language is concerned. a misplaced 0 can cause a bricked ecm. There thread floating around of a dude who did just that to an ebr ecm because of the cache for the TPS reset I believe. Alternatively the Tunerpro files can be adjusted as people find problems someone handy with the programming can help you out. And finally while ECMspy is comparatively easier to use by a long shot you are limited to their product support which im not sure there is anymore best of luck |

Just to clarify, there often is confusion in ECMspy threads, because there are two different programs that are vastly different. The old free ECMspy was discontinued a few years ago, it's final version was 1.12.27, it was discontinued not long after the 08 models started coming out, so it has very limited support for them, all depending on what firmware your bike is running. I've had limited success with it on 08 bikes, those with the older firmwares are compatible, but the newer ones will cause ECM to display wrong data, or not load anything at all. Simply using ECMspy to read won't cause any harm to any ECM, but given the lack of compatibility with the newer bikes I don't recommend it. It is great for the 99-07 bikes, quick and easy to install, very simple and easy to use. _____________ The newer ECMspy is called ECMspy Mono, it is the one currently available from ECMspy.com, it is not free, you have to make a donation to a hospital to use the program, and my understanding is that it locks itself to the computer and ECM you use it on. I've played with the demo version, it works like the old free one, except it supports the newer ECMs. I haven't bought a copy of it yet because of the licensing restrictions. I have many Buells, stock and Race ECMs for all of them, plus I occasionally do TPS resets and tweaking for others. My understanding is that it is $40 a pop, that will add up fast. _____________ The option I personally recommend for the 08+ bikes is TunerPro RT. It technically is $40, but registration is optional and it only gives you a nag screen if you don't register. Thanks to Xopti, this program has significantly more functionality than ECMspy as it lets you easily edit all the parameters in the ECM. The downside to this program is the learning curve and setup. Quite frankly, it is a pain in the balls to get configured and use, even for someone tech savy like me. I tried doing it this weekend for Griffmeister in a parking lot, all the download links to the various files it needs depending on which ECM you have were all dead. Once you get the program installed you have to configure multiple settings and plugins, find matching ADX files, etc. Once you got it up and running, it lets you do some amazing things. It should let you reset the AFV to 100, I don't see why it wouldn't. I personally haven't tried it, I'll look into it tonight. It may require you manually finding the AFV entry and changing the number to 100 then saving it, vs the easy button like ECMspy does. |

Old ecmspy is not compatible with EBR ECMS. EBR and I learned this after bricking multiple ecms a few years back. |

So Frank, where would you slot ECMDroid with the BlueTooth connector into the mix then? Is it an ECMSpy Mono port? Or a Tunerpro RT port? Or something completely different? |

I've never used ECMdroid, so I can't comment on that (I use Windows phones). It was made by Xopti who helped adapt TunerPro for us, not Gunther/ECMspy team. (Message edited by froggy on May 12, 2014) |

Old ecmspy is not compatible with EBR ECMS. EBR and I learned this after bricking multiple ecms a few years back. Please state what function you were doing in order to "Brick" the EBR ECM's? FROGGY I am well aware of both versions of ECMSPY. I have used both. I purchased a lic for MONO 2 for the stock ECM I replaced with the current EBR ECM. I never did any mods to the fuel maps. Just AFV reset and Fault Code reading/reset. Can someone please explain why and how an ECM can get "bricked" by just downloading and then reading live data from it. No data is being transmitted back to the ECM in this operation. I can understand how resetting the AFV may do this. But not the initial operation of gathering data. I am not trying to be argumentative by any means. Just does not make any sense. Simply trying to understand how any damage can occur. Thanks again. (Message edited by Rickpxb12scgr on May 12, 2014) |

As I've said above, reading with free ECMspy does not damage the ECM. |

I have to admit a point of confusion here. I fully understand that ECMspy is not compatible with the firmware on the EBR ECM and can be damaged with a TPS reset. What I don't understand is how the tool used by a HD dealer would be compatible with the EBR firmware. Certainly HD never designed their tool with the EBR firmware in mind, so how does this work? |

The EBR firmware is the same as a stock firmware, but one that free ECMspy was not properly developed for. That is how the constantly updated HD tool can read and write to it correctly, but a no longer developed freeware program cannot. |

I do not know about that FROGGY. The SIX HD Dealers I have consulted with out here in CA & NV regarding firmware up dates for EBR ECM's all state they can not work on any EBR ECM dated after 2010. This due to the non compliance agreement with Eric Buell after the BUELL/HD break up. EBR has absolutely NOTHING to do with HD and thus HD is not req'd to keep up with any after dated ECM's etc that come from EBR. According to them, their DIGITAL TECHNICIAN II does not have the updates included for the EBR ECM's dated after 2010. |

That's what I was thinking. Why would HD bother to support an add on to a bike brand that they killed off, and never seemed to support well in the first place. It's a complete dead end for them to bother with. Anyone know the official view of EBR on how to do a TPS reset on their current ECMs? |

You are confusing two totally different things. HD does not provide any support for EBR ECMs, they can't update them (even if there was an update), they can use their tools and reset the TPS, clear trouble codes, etc, if needed, just like they have the tools to inflate your 3rd party tires or attach a 3rd party exhaust.
quote:Anyone know the official view of EBR on how to do a TPS reset on their current ECMs?
They recommend you have it done by a dealer (preferably one that knows what they are doing.) Thankfully for those with 08+ bikes, the TPS can be done without dealer intervention. |

Ddfi3 cuts out the dealer for tps reset. Froggy's statement I finf valid due to this...up untill 2009 the hd dealers still serviced everything. ..as such ebr ecm firmware was most likely updated with any hd software together...bad business to sell an ecm that you have to drive 5 hours for a simple service. |

bad business to sell an ecm that you have to drive 5 hours for a simple service. The damn thing is illegal to be ridden in the state of CA. Can only imagine how many other states it is legal to have it on your "street" approved rig. Remember.. it is a "RACE ONLY" ECM" and was never intended to be supported by HD. As FROGGY posted, anything '08 and after, does not require dealer support to initiate/set up. i.e. TPS RESET etc. |

And thats what I was getting at with my post lol...so your answer ultimately with the race use cut out hd comment is pickup an ebr approved unit to work with your ebr ecm. |
