I bought a used Ulysses with 23,000 miles on it, and nothing had been taken care of on it.

At idle I notice a lot of noise on the push rod side of the engine.

If I open the to top end up, what should I be looking for?

My 2005 Scg doesn't have nearly the same amount of engine noise.

Any help would be great.

what year? hopefully not 2007.

I've hear of the roller on the lifters failing before.

Sorry, I should know better.

2006 XB12X with 23kmi.

Given the rest of the bike got zero love,(I had to get the kickstand replaced under the safety recall last month) I expect the engine and trans need a 25Kmi service.

Some one at the dealer I bought it from(not an HD shop) replaced the pushrod cover gaskets, at least that's what the service record showed.

The bike sounds like the lifters are clacking, but it's hard to tell. I could post a video if it would help.

Noisy compared to what? These things do make a lot of valve train noise, so if you aren't used to listening to an air cooled overhead valve engine, it may sound quite scary. The fact that the cams are directly supported by the right side casing lets it transmit a lot of noise.

Having said that, the hydraulic lifters have been known to collapse on occasion.

Did you get it cheap enough to do a rebuild? If so the just tear it down, replace lifters, have valve job done and check valve guides, new valves, etc. Might be worth checking the cylinders for wear and replace or big bore kit and check rod bearings for play. You can do a complete top end rebuild for about $2500, so if the price was good, just put the money back in.

Argent, regarding 2007's, are you referring to crank problems or something else?

yeah, I was referring to the crank failure. I see some 2006 bikes are on the failure list as well.

Why replace the pushrod cover gaskets? How much do you have to disassemble to get to those? How long did you let the motor run while making noise? If they let them bleed off when doing the gaskets it might take a little bit for them to refill.

I have had the lifters drain out on my sportster when changing the oil (only one time). the first time I started it after refilling I thought i screwed up the engine and shut it off immediately. After a bit of thinking and double-checking my work I started it again. It made noise and evenutally quieted down as the lifters re-pressurized. I have no idea why they bled down, and it only happened one time in the 6 years i've had it.

Audio/video of the bike running at idle, and a few revs.

For me the comparison is between the Uly with 23K and my wife's 2005 XB12Scg with 4600miles on it.
Her bike sounds much more quiet.

The gaskets were changed because the old ones were leaking. I only know this because no one cleaned the oil/dirt off the engine castings.

Since this video I have changed the oil and filter, and used Mobil 1 V-twin 20W-50.
The only engine mods are an 08 air box with a K&N filter, but that shouldn't be of concern.

yeah, that doesn't sound right to me. How open is this "open airbox"?

like this?

I got a chance to hear that bike at homecoming a few years back, and I thought it sounded weird, but this doesn't really sound like that.

I'm going to guess you need lifters and very likely at least one cylinder/piston combo.

Mine sounds like that during the warm up phase.
Soon as engine is at operating temperature, the noise stops.
I'm pretty sure it's a lifter.

So If I'm replacing lifters, should I replace the pushrods at the same time?

Probably not, the push rods are probably fine but it is worth measuring them and look at the ends and check to make sure they aren't bent.

If they are straight and otherwise undamaged the push rods should be fine to reuse.

I think your fine adjust primary chain per service manual, change oil 20w50 for both engine and primary.
