Hey everyone quick question, I just purchased an 04 XB12R, with 10k miles and the only previous owner hasn't changed the primary/trans oil since it's 1k miles break in period. So, I'm gonna be changing it soon. My question is, how necessary is putting locktite on the drain bolt whenever I put it back in? I think I read that red locktite is needed, and it needs to cure for 24 hours before filling with 20w-50. I owned a Buell Blast before, and I never used licktite on the primary drain bolt, and it never leaked. Thoughts on this? Thanks! |

No, do not use any thread locker material on the drain plug, either engine or trans. Replace the o'ring; and if you want you can add a thread sealant on the bolt threads. Also, do not over torque the drain plugs, especially the oil tank plug. This is what I use on the drain plug threads. http://www.all-spec.com/products/59235.html?gclid=COqChq6px70CFVBffgodG4oAjA (Message edited by teeps on April 04, 2014) |

Good tip on not over-tightening. The shop manual torque value for '07 XB12S is too high. I can't look up the correct lower torque now, but it must be in the Knowledge Vault. |

No loctite, especially not RED! As for thread sealant, not the Teflon tape kind. Get the some stuff in a tube. |

Just to clarify The manual does call for a Loctite brand product, but it is their PTFE pipe thread sealant paste. |
