I've just rebuilt the engine in my 2003 XB12 and upgraded to the 2008 crank and have replaced the stator and voltage regulator to match.

As the new regulator has a different plug from the older regulator I plan to reuse the old plug from the old unit.

The only issue I have is making sure which is the positive and negative wire coming out of the regulator as both wires are black and I haven't been able to find any diagrams which show which wire is which.

If I connect the new regulator to the stator and crank the engine over will this produce enough current for me to be able to use a multimeter to work out which wire is positive? Or does anyone have any wiring diagram of the unit showing which wires are which.

Does the '08 still use a rectifier/regulator? As in the feed from the stator is AC current that is converted to DC by the regulator. In other words, which wire goes where doesn't matter.

Hey Sifo, thanks for the reply.

Just to clarify that the orientation of the wires that I'm worried about are the output wires from the regulator and I believe that one wire will feed positive to the battery and the other will be ground/negative. Are you saying that these wires aren't polarity sensitive?

Sorry, I'm not an expert on electrics but I understand this new system is single phase with 2 wires from the stator to the regulator compared to previous 3 phase system with 3 wires coming from the stator. Haven't been able to find much info diagrams about the regulator on the net.

Thanks for you help.

Thought you were talking about the wires from the stator. The output from the regulator will obviously be DC and have a positive wire. I guess one way to find out if cranking will give you a voltage to measure is just try it.

See the polarity note here: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17307.html

But if in doubt, measure the resistance of the sockets to the chassis. The ground pin is shorted to the chassis, the hot pin is open to the chassis.

Whoops, I misunderstood. You're going to use the 2008 regulator. I don't have that polarity labeled. But the socket to ground test is still valid.

Thanks for all your advice.
I'll test the resistance of the sockets to the chassis and go from there.

I'm close to getting the bike on the road and only have a month left till it starts to snow here so really excited about firing the bike up and going for a ride in the next week.

Really appreciate the advice I get on this forum. Thanks.
