basically i cut as much material as i could away from the main can right next to the actual outlet pipe.  | ||

I basically did this for my 9R stock muffler...I cut the end off my muffler then removed a section from the back of that last outlet pipe...I cut out a small-ish section from the side of the pipe facing the end thinking that (maybe) some of the gases would follow the normal route and some would follow the new short route It made the bike real loud...it lost power low down but I could feel a real kick above 4K rpm. I didn't like it that much and bought a race muffler Odie just bought the muffler from me to make a Drummer out of it for his 12S (Brian told me the mod shouldn't make a difference). | ||

If I read you correctly, you cut into the can next to the tail pipe? If so, you have essentially created an escape for the exhaust at the end of the initial entrance( tube from header to rear of muffler ) into the muffler. The exhaust fills the open area at the rear of the can before being forced into the center (on a 9 pipe) tube which has the holes to the center chamber which do most of the quieting down part. It's much louder cause you have (almost) a straight pipe. If this is the case, you might want to be careful, you could be running on a much reduced back pressure, and lead to possible engine damage. Deerhunter...you're reading it right...sorta. I cut the end "cap" off the muffler - it wasn't a totally straight cut since I had to avoid the outtake. I then removed a small section from one side (the side facing toward the end of the muffler) of the final outlet pipe and welded the cap back on. Since I had left most of the outlet pipe intact (the section I removed was small), the hope was that some of the gases would follow the normal "S" route and some would escape through the new route, along with the increase in noise. Like I said above, I wasn't that thrilled with it. The loss in power down low made me realize that all the gases were following the path of least resistance - the big increase in noise helped realize that too...  The bike popped a lot when off the gas too, which made me worry that it was running too lean | ||

I already have plans to pull the pipe and weld it back up until i can get a different pipe ordered. I too am tired of the noise and the backfire type popping has concerned me also. | ||

Hey Jeremyh, if you are interested i have a modified 9 pipe that I'd like to get some feedback on. If louder is all you want, with little to no diff in stock back pressure, performance or appearance. Actually, I would let you have it for shipping cost alone, just to get some feedback. It is not a finished project, but if you like it, I would be willing to take your stock pipe and do the same, but cleaner, all you would have to pay is shipping.( and of course that would include returning the "Test " piece. We call it frankenstien, it's had some major surgery, and wears the scares. My intended finsh product will not bear them. Anyhow, just lookin for an interested objective person to try it out. |
