I have my XB12 apart for base gaskets among other things and was wondering, has anyone tried thermal barrier coating on the top of our pistons? Supposedly it keeps more heat in the combustion chamber instead of soaking into the piston. Anyone have experience with it? I've heard the skirt coating wears off fairly quickly but haven't really heard much about the thermal coating on top. |

I have used thermal barrier coatings on several of my pistons on my turbo XB and on my turbo Saab. I can't say as to how much they help but they do add a bit of insurance. The coating does not hold up very well to detonation but as long as the motor is tuned well it should be just fine. |

I had mine done on the race bike but to be honest never noticed any difference in performance or riding. Dyno figures were the same before and after too. Maybe it protected the piston crown slightly but it is very difficult to tell. |
