is starting to make me cringe. i hate it when i go somewhere, and the fan goes full blast when i turn the bike off and everybody looks. i act like i dont know where its coming from and casually walk away from my bike...when in reality, i know everyone is looking at me thinking 'what the hell?' i dont know about the rest of you folks, but the fan for the rear cylinder is the only thing that i truly hate about my bike. everything else, i love to death. even when the fan is running when the bike is running, i dont care about. but when i turn it off, i dont want the fan to come on. i dont really see it how it can help. how can the rear cylinder overheat after its been shut off? maybe its just me, but i think the fan is not needed after shutting the bike off. but when running, yes, there is every bit of reason to have it running due to lack of airflow. thoughts or opinions? | ||

Its to keep the heat from the rear cylinder heatsoaking and cooking the oil in the head. Trapped in the frame the way it is, the head will retain teh heat longer then the front cylinder which can cause the oil to gum up the works in the head. I have no problem with the fan, its been a great conversation starter for me. Now its gotten to the point I really don't notice it, except for this weekend it seemed to run longer then CJ's on her XB. | ||

I have noticed that mine runs longer some times and the temp and riding conditions are extremely close on a day to day basis.......sometimes I worry that something is wrong when it comes on unexpectedly or stays on longer that usual......... | ||

Why does it bother you? Are there other situations in your life where you feel everyone is out to get you? Why do you think that everyone is thinking "What the hell?". If they truly are, why is that a bad thing? They just don't understand that it's doing that so your oil (and therefor your engine) will last longer. | ||

Funny Observation: I was riding with another XB9r and an XB12r last weekend and when we stopped, all the hair dryer fans ran and then as if they were following the same direction, all shut off within 2 sec of each other. It was one of those moments that make you go Hmmmmm. | ||

I just tell people that the little electric motor is rewinding the rubber band and they get a chuckle out of that. | ||

Heat rises right? All that heat in the motor goes up to the heads. As for myself, when people look I just tell them it is thinking about going out to play by itself...love the looks I get at that point! | ||

What Wycked said is the one and only reason the fan is there.I think Erik called after burn when you shut off the motor and the oil thats above the piston bakes and burns. | ||

Why not have a pump to circulate oil instead. Should be more efficient. | ||

pumps take more juice then the fan. Would you like to come out to start your bike only to find it diead cause the pump ran it down? | ||

My fan sounds like its got water in it or something,mabye a piece of tar or sumthin but its definetly NOT just a fan noise. | ||

The factory should look at putting curved blades and not spacing them evenly around the hub and they will be quiter and be more efficient to boot | ||

Hmmmm!!!Thats interesting,not that the fan bothers me but if it does others what would it take to change just the fan blades out.Can it be done and how hard. | ||

I just tell them it's the electric motor powered supercharger spooling up another charge in the plenum chamber. OR It's the thing that makes damned fools ask questions. They love that one, they do. Bob} | ||

If you start looking around you could probably find plenty of fans with those dimensions and power requirements... I wouldn't mind getting a louder one that will draw more CFM. | ||

I have had my bike for a week and I have already gotten strange looks. Some harley riders look and say, "Is that you?" I say "Yes, it's the fan." Then they act satisfied. I figure they think it is liquid cooled. It is weird. You know when you shut it off the looks are going to come. I take satisfaction in knowing that it is there for a purpose. My family used to have a compact car that did the same thing and that baffled people too. I have no problem with it. This is a unique machine with character all its own. | ||

maybe i need to just look at the fan in a different way. right now, i see it as a loud abnoxious embarrasing device to cool our air cooled engines. perhaps i should see it as an innovative yet simple design to keep our engines from overheating. i dont know. i will admit...a guy asked me at a gas station a couple of weeks ago "hey what is that noise?" and i jokingly told him "oh, its just the fan to cool off the turbo jets". he laughed and asked "are you serious?". and then i spilled the truth. i felt embarrased about telling him what the fan was really for but it didnt phase him a bit. he was more or less astonished about the way the bike looks. i think i will just continue to crack a joke about the fan. it made me feel good when i told him about the fake turbo jets. hehe btw, i didn't think i would get this many responses for this thread. maybe the fan is a highly talked about item? it's definitly different, thats for sure! | ||

I generally just tell them the truth and you can then see their look change to intense curiosity. Then they ask about the brake. I generally have to mention the fuel in the frame and oil in the swingarm because they don't tend to notice those. | ||

The most I get is "Hey did you leave your bike on" I just look at them like they are an idiot and say thanks for letting me know and walk away. | ||

Since I changed to Syn3 the fan runs less often. Candidly... when I park the bike and the few times the fan has not run... as I assume it was not necessary... it bothered me. It is there to cool off the rear cylinder and prevent oil problems... I like the sound of it. It was engineered that way. I am also the kind of person who has this kind of tude'... that... I personally hate the fan - I know everyone want's that traditional harley / Buell burble exhaust but why not a quiet fan? | ||

i tell people its to keep the tyres warm for better grip. They always look at me like wtf?!? Then I tell em to stick their hand under the seat/above the tire. Some actually believe it when they feel the hot air blowing on my tyre... | ||
