It was the lighting from the last time, it's not burnt looking at all.

Just glad someone else is looking out for me, I forgot to say "THANKS!", didn't I? |

Hi everyone. D and Brake, were there any warnings of the bearing going out at all? Since the time I had my engine back together, 5th gear has been popping out and once in awhile will get jammed in 3rd. They seem to give me the most trouble, but neutral is harder to find than I recall before I had the engine apart. Also, there seems to be a whine during freeway speeds, but maybe it's the helmet I'm using as I got it the same time I got the bike running again. The sound is like the fan is running. Lower speeds it's not there. Should I suspect the 5th gear bearing going out? |

What I wonder if would a spring loaded tensioner help prevent this? I notice that new belts are insanely tight and can't imagine that is good for any of the bearings in that system. |

My only real warning was a ringing sound that was hard to pinpoint where it was coming from. Initially, I though maybe the idler pulley bearings were the culprit, but found out pretty quick that wasn't it. It only took a few minutes to verify it was transmission related, from there a bit of time passed before I could get back to it. I finally popped the outer seal off, lots of metal shavings/bits were there and you could see the damage. If it's hard to shift into specific gears, I'd bet more on a bent shift fork. Mine didn't suffer any shift issues prior to failure of the bearing. Cataract2, I'm working on a "fix" for it. Parts are being drawn up via Autocad for me, not sure if or when it will come to light. |

WAs it a ringing or more like a humming sound? I get a bit of a humming sound now that I have a new belt in place, didn't put enough miles on that belt to worry about metal shaving, but I'm thinking I need to look at that bearing straight away! Can that bearing be removed without splitting the cases, assuming it is still in one piece? |

It was a definite ring, didn't matter if it was on the gas or off. Just ting, ting, ting, ting. Loud enough to hear it and I KNEW something was wrong. The bearing can NOT be removed without splitting the case. It's a press fit into the case, as well as a tight fit on to the shaft, ie; press fit there as well. There are tools specific to do the job, but if you know your way around bikes, it can be done without them. A press is very handy to have for something like this. |

You don't have to go all the way to the spring loaded tensioner (which brings it's own stack of headaches). You can simply make the holes in the factory tensioner used to bolt it to the cases slightly larger. That lets it "skew" a little and takes tension off. |

When my output bearing went it was kind of a whirring sound, very faint. I do wonder if it was the new belt I had put on a few thousand miles earlier, it was really tight, and my wheel bearings went bad around the same time as the output shaft. The aftermarket goodyear belt I got was not as tight, but still snug, as it should be. |

This humming started as soon as I put on a new belt which seemed really very tight at the time. It is sleeping right now but in a few months I'll have to check it. New wheel bearing went in so I'm fairly certain it is not coming from there, but it could be more pressure on the tension idler that is exposing a bad bearing in my idler. The idler felt fine so I left it alone, hoping my noise is from it since it is a much easier fix. |

And it LIVES!!! Started it up tonight, ran through all the gears on the stands. Pretty loud with just headers only. |

Thank you very much, D_adams. Very informative and photos were great. I will be tackling this soon on my bike. What was your procedure for separating the case halves? Did you use any homemade or specialty tools? I attribute the bearing failure to the three belt changes, all of which were crazy tight when new. Regarding the nut for removing the primary chain: isn't there a big warning that says "no sharp blows"? I interpret that as meaning "no impact wrench." |
