Good day, fellow Buellers.
I know that primary case lubrication has been discussed at great length. At the risk of attempting to re-invent the wheel, I have to ask: Who's used Lucas synthetic 75w-90 (It appears the part number is 10047)?

I have searched around here and buellxb and found very little mention of Lucas, outside of a few problems encountered when using the additive in the primary... but only one mention of the oil itself being used.

My perception is that the product is designed to be comparable to Mobil 1 75w-90 LS lube...

Any input would be helpful.

You will need to call Lucas Tech Support. It is rated to GL-5. The info on line does not say if it does or does not contain sulfur.

If it contains sulfur, the sulfur will eat the copper windings in the stator. Otherwise it should work.

The old rule of thumb: GL-4 no sulfur, GL-5 has sulfur.

IMHO, Formula+ works better than anything else. I've tried Mobil 1 gear oil (and lost a stator), various 20W-50 engine oils, and Formula+, and the transmission shifts noticeably better with the factory product than anything else.

I've never used anything but Formula +.
Never have had any clutch or shifting problems with my '06 Uly (28K miles.)

The price of F + is comparable to other replacement fluids, and is readily available at any H/D dealer, I've walked into.
It's the one thing I've never had to special order at the dealer.

The only reason I would use an alternative lubricant in the primary case/transmission. Would be if Formula + was not available, and waiting was not an option.

It takes almost exactly 20,000 miles for the stator to fail when using GL-5.
It happened twice to me before I found out that one should not use Mobil1.
Formula+ gets my vote as well.

Great info, guys. It's interesting, your comments about Mobil1; seems to have rave reviews all around. Formula+ seems like the way to go, though. Thanks!}

Oh, for what it's worth, I found this whitepaper: http://www.goodsenseoil.com/G2457-GearOilWhitePape r.pdf

In the end, Lucas does not fair well at all. Originally, I asked because I had a few quarts leftover from a previous project and wondered.
Amsoil tests out to be the best, but Formula+ was not tested.

I'm using Amsoil and have found their 20-50 to work just fine in the primary. I prefer it over the Formula+ simply because I don't have to walk into a HD dealer. Formula+ does work great though. Not all oils work as well in the primary.

Amsoil will deliver to your door BTW. I'm near a warehouse so they get it to me VERY fast too.
