I need a throttle body for my '06 uly. The butterfly shaft broke riding last night. |

Paging Tootal! He had that problem and had a replacement shaft machined. He kindly had extras made. You can reimburse him for the machining costs and save yourself a small fortune. |

I kind of decided to wait a bit, if I really get in a bind I can put my XB9 TB back on and retune. Would you be interested in sharing the design? I'd kind of like to make my own and see if I can do it. I have a small milling machine and like challenges like this when they aren't a critical need item (other words it isn't broke yet). I'll keep everything to myself if you are willing to share. And if you aren't willing to share, I understand too, it can take a lot of work to get some things designed. |

Well let me just say that making the original was a real pain. Putting a 1/16" slot in stainless steel with an endmill is nerve racking. The endmill isn't long enough to do it in one set up so you have to turn it over and get it just right. Trust me, if I could have just spent $75.00 for one I would have never gone to the trouble!! The ones that were CNC'd were done with a slitting saw. If I were to make more I'd try waterjet or laser! |

I might have a saw that would work, but you are right that a 1/16 end mill in stainless would be no fun at all. |

That's cool Teeps. I think I still have it but it's in my old computer and I've already gotten the blue screen of death once! I nursed it back long enough to get all pertinent information off before it crashed again! |

Thanks, sent you a pm so you should be able to just reply to that message. Would brass be strong enough? Just trying to think of other materials that could be used. |

Info sent. I know little to nothing about metallurgy, so can't comment on whether brass would be strong enough. But, a fabricator friend I showed the project to, favored a Chromoly steel. And suggested having the finished part hard chrome plated for corrosion resistance. Never went any farther than the thought process because Tootal had already made a run of shafts. |

I may check into Titanium, need to look at the machining properties and see if it work hardens like stainless. It might make a better choice overall. Some of the brass alloys should be fine for this, but I don't think I have anything in (near) that diameter, not that brass is simple to machine either. A high chrome steel should machine nicely and I think there might be a couple of alloys that are rust resistant. Need to overcome some challenges to make this on my mill, really need a lathe to get this done easily. |

If you don't like machining stainless then you really won't like titanium!! That's the toughest stuff I've ever dealt with! My original shaft was 304 stainless and I believe my cousin used 316 which is a little tougher but still machines ok. If you want to do it use the 304. Brass would be easy to machine but I'd be worried about strength. The original shafts from Buell were stainless. The shafts diameter is 8mm but 5/16" is just a couple of thousandths smaller. Should work if 8mm is hard to find. |

Cool, I have a bunch of precision ground 8mm in stainless and drill rod, also have aluminum if I want to give it a try before I start breaking mills on the real version. |
