So I was stuck behind cars on Mount Palomar. I am spinning at 3000 to 4000 rpm. All of a sudden she tries to die. When I come to a stop she won't idle. I have to keep giving her gas or she dies. This even happens while going down the road. At 5000 rpm it feels like I hit the rev limiter. I was getting bad lean surge after the bike started to act up. Once home I try and start her and she idles to 3000 rpm and dies. Sometimes she will surge for a short time and die. I make it home. The XB12r is a 07 with 14000 miles. I have a D&D exhaust, and a K&N air filter. I have played with the maps. She was running real good on the latest map I made. I put the stock map in and the same symptoms. I changed the plugs and the were black and wet. Too rich I assume. I opened up the air box and it was all oily inside. I had cleaned the intake 1500 miles ago and it was black and oily. I decide it was time for the breather reroute. I cleaned out the whole thing with seafoam. I did multiple TPS resets. I tested the TPS. All seems ok. I have had a few backfires and even one through the throttle body. She just won't run with out me twisting the throttle. She falls flat on her face. I open the butter fly on the throttle body and I see black oily mess in the front cylinder. The rear one is cleaner. I see carbonized black oily mess on what little I can see in the throttle body on the front jug. Both cylinders seems to fire. I ordered plug wires and a coil. I might put new intake seals on the throttle body. Any clue? I have read multiple near exact issues but no fixes to the problem. I put new plugs in when it cooled down. I also did the reroute of the breather bs. I rebuilt the fuel pump 3000 miles ago. It had chaffed wires. I put a fuel line around the wires and put it back together. It has been fine since. I will have to check the regulator and cam position sensor. |

Pop open the airbox and have a look at the throttle body/butterfly/shaft. Your symptoms sound like what my X1 did when the little shaft broke. The TPS sensor is on one side and was basically not moving when I poked at the throttle. |

Someone found a cross reference for the TPS so you can buy it at the auto stores, have to search to find it. |

Always start at the battery, make sure it is good and fully charged. Then check the battery cable connections, especially the ground cable connection to the frame. |

on the 2003 in northern areas, you might also need to remove and clean the subframe. I just ended up running a second ground wire from the frame lug to the engine mount on the engine side to try and sort out a starter motor issue. I may run another directly down to the starter once I find a spot to attach the wire. |

The shaft is ok. I twisted the throttle with an ohm meter attached to the tps. It changed states evenly, .5 to 5.00 ohms or something like that. I did buy the tps213 at autozone. It was not the right tps. The range was wrong. When installed it would not allow my throttle to open fully. I have started it with the air box off and I get detenation up thru the throttle body. I am getting a back fire thru the throttle body when I give it any gas. I am also getting gas in the exhaust as well. I seem to be getting lots of gas in both the intake manifolds and out to the exhaust. I might have a intake manifold leak. (Message edited by HeyZeus on March 18, 2013) |

" I may run another directly down to the starter once I find a spot to attach the wire." I put mine under the nut on one of the through bolts, right hand side about three years ago. Come to think of it, I haven't had to clean subframe, etc connections since. It was an easy access job and the wire was simple to route also. |

Have you checked the static timing? Just wondering if the plate has moved or if maybe the sensor is going bad. |

Rubber plug on the side of the tbi unit went bsd on mine and a fellow webber, replaced that and all was well. |

So i found the front cylinder intake seal was bad. It now will idle but there is still a problem. I am leaning toward the cam position sensor. For some reason the cam position sensor diagnostic check box was unchecked in the ecm. It was at the dealer before I bought it so I think they were chasing dragons trying to find a problem. I am only guessing. |

I know this sounds funny but check your plug wires I had a mouse chew into mine and it wouldn't fail until it got hot or wet played hell trying to figure it out. |

Looks like it might be a bad cylinder temp sensor. I disconnected it and the bike ran for some time before dieing. It would not do that with it connected. I also changed the cam position sensor it started coding. |

I changed out the head temp sensor it was bad and out of range. I next pulled the fuel pump and found a bad hose. This kept me from full pressure. Still it ran like dodo. I next set the AFV to 100% Tada. The beast is back. |
