Yes, they are different. The splines are different to fit the different crankshaft. |

YEah, I had thought just the MAin dia. of the 2008 and up were larger ( bearing area ) ,But the Spline part of them were the same... So are you saying having both side by side one can tell the difference?? I must be blind then.... |

Yes, the splines are bigger on the 2008-2010 crankshafts. |

OKay, So no way say a sprocket from a 2007 XB9 will even fit ,go on the splines of a 08 or 09 model year then xb9..is that correct? Thanks |

Well.. I have a 2003 xb 9 crank here ... So I put a known XB9 2004 model year on it and see how snug / tight it fits..... ( is tight)back and forth really is none at all.... Now I put what is suppose to be a 2008 xb9 front sprocket on the same 2003 crank ..it fits right on, However there is a tad more slack back and forth play in it than the the 2004 xb 9 sprocket...NOT much but there is more back and forth free play where as the 2004 has none... My quetion then is , IS this all the difference that should be , a little more free play where the 2004 on the 2003 crank has none... Doesn`t seem like a WHOLE lOT of difference BUT there is some.... So IS this correct? THanks guys, Just want to make sure I got the right 2008 xb9 sprocket here before I tear the 2008 xb12 apart to install it.. Hope this makes sense to you all....???? HOpe I`m not beating the |

The diameter of the splines is much larger on the 08 later cranks. The sprocket will slide on but will flop all over the place. If your "08" sprocket fits properly on the 03 splines, it is not an 08 sprocket |

Thanks Ericz was hoping you wd. reply... It does slide on the 03 crank, and it does have back and forth play on the splines some what back and forth While holding it tight on........ Where as the o4 slides on as easy as the 08 say but the 04 does NOT have any back and forth play at all is tight ... I did try another Known 04 sprocket and it is the same as the other 04 sprocket Tight.... But I would have thought it was going to be hell of alot more back and forth or Noticeable Play..which I bought from this fella here.. Just saying the 08 has the play BUT its not like day and night.... I bought it from this fella here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 694213.html?1348691278 Just weird as it don`t seem to have ALOT of difference...Were all 2008 Uly with the NEW motor?? |

2007 was supposed to be the transition year where some 2007 had the new motor, so I would expect all 2008 to have the new motor but no proof one way or the other. |

Maybe they did something when they changed from the Gates belt to the Goodyear belt. 03 I think was the only year with the Gates belt. |

All of the 2008 models have the DDFI 3 engine management and the new engine designs. |

So..Are we talking a HUGE difference or like 1/32, 1/16 of an inch in difference while its on its splines , with a rocking back and forth motion comparing one to the other..... As I am suppose to have here one for a 2008 and one for a 2003 xb9 and there is NOT a huge difference between the both,? YA think they would have Bloody part numbers on them.... |

I can't say. If you have an 08 bike there, Take the primary cover off and look at the 2008. You could just reuse the gasket fill it back up with the old oil if you are worried about having to replace that stuff. Almost a month and you haven't done this yet? Haha! |

The Problem is I am on the East coast NOva Scotia, the 2009 is on the West Coast British Columbia haha..Now ya know... Thats the reason I am asking this..Damn IF OI had both here I wd. have just tore into it and done the swap... Especially not worried about saving used oil LoL... |

I'll be pulling my primary cover off in the next week or two. I'll take some measurements then and let you know, if that's not too far off |

I wd. appreciate that... Thanks.... Not good at measuring though..Especially if there is just a tad in the difference...I know the Cranks are Larger in the 08 and up..But the splines for the sprocket...Don`t think there is much difference there, at least maybe just a few thousands etc.. ??? |

Just measured the differences between the 2008+ and the 2003-2007 crank splines. The 2003-2007 spline outer diameter is 0.990" and the 2008+ spline outer diameter is 1.240". The difference is so large that a 2008+ sprocket will not even engage with the 2003-2007 crank splines. There is LOTS of play between the two. |

HE also said The 2008 and later unit is riveted together and is not to be separated. And that the 03 to 07 are bolted..But I am not sure IF that is even correct..I think they are all bolted together not sure though... |

No problem. The 2008+ units are not riveted. They are bolted just like the 03-07 units. |

I sold this to Hogs. It came off my 2008 XB12XT. The part was shipped in the box I bought it in, which was ordered for a 2008 XB9. It as been months since I uninstalled and sold this. I thought it was riveted because I had to buy the assembly and could not buy the sprocket like on the earlier models. I know it came off my 2008 XB12XT which is the new style engine. I do not have a 2007 and earlier bike to get mixed up with. Sorry at this point I feel like I am having to defend myself. |

Hogs, how does your 2008 sprocket measure? I am very curious now. Can you post any pictures of what you are working with? |
