Made it back to house (3 blocks). Bike had been seeming to be losing power for about a week. Suspecting a drive gear or pump failure. David @ DK cycles agreed & is putting a used one he had laying around in. I believe power loss due to drop in oil pressure not pumping up lifters fully thereby not opening valves fully. Having owned several HD bikes and my background as an ass certified tech, this makes sense to me. What do you guys think? |

Is it possible that the lifters were letting too much oil through and thereby caused the low pressure? Clogged/crimped oil line so the pump can't pull the required amount? Wrecked oil pump drive gear (known problem) causing the pump to only catch a few teeth and not spin fast enough? This normally results in a wrecked motor because of the metal teeth floating around and getting stuck in other parts. |

Oil lines fine, David and I are fairly confident the issue is either the gear or the pump. Yes, I checked the oil. Didn't see any glitter in it. If oil flow is similar to an XL in the XB then it goes from the pump to the filter. In a perfect world the filter would catch any pieces if the pump grenades. Given the valve train in HD engines gets oil last, hopefully my bottom end escaped any gear pieces. My lifters may be paper weights though. |

Yeah, it flows pretty much the same but the gear that breaks is attached to the cam and is a known issue. Recommendation is to change this to the newer style bronze gear if it hasn't already been changed or newer than 2006. They also changed pumps somewhere in there but I don't remember the year they changed them. You should be able to look up inside the when you remove the pump and see if the drive gear is worn, if so replace the gear and a new gasket on the cam cover. |

David called today. Bikes fixed, he did it faster and way cheaper than I expected. I've been buying parts from DK cycles for a while. Prices are good, service is great. Way faster than any local dealers. I've does some blasting on one of David's bikes. He's an old school biker who likes our bikes. He's in archdale, NC. And it was the rotten gear. |

Both gears were shredded, not happy. |

The best way to check is pull the cam cover, next best way is pull the oil pump and look inside. In the past when one of those gears disintegrates the pieces take a lot of other stuff with them. Now that I've done the work once, I would just plan on pulling the cam cover and if I thought it was the original gear I would just plan on replacing it (which is what I did when I was rebuilding the top end). |

I don't remember if it was 06 or 07, since mine was an 03 I knew I needed it. I bought mine from American Sport Bike along with a bunch of other stuff I needed when I was doing my top end rebuild. Take a good look at the pump side gear if you go in through the cam cover to make sure it is in good shape. |

Bad news, cam bushings are spun. gonna mic the bushing bores in the case to see if the O/S bushings from Jim's will work. If not I'm buying a spare engine to run while I build the original into a vicous 88. |

Let us know about the over size bushings since this is a somewhat common problem. |
