This is a lazy question. I have not checked to see if the cable is loose at the engine casing.

With that said, do we figure that's all there is to it? Or is this endemic of an old cable that needs replaced?

My cable did the same thing. It wore a hole in the outer sheath and oil would weep out of the hole over time. I ordered a new teflon coated cable and fluid and gaskets and my cable broke at the clutch lever end while pulling out of my garage before a little ride.

I'd replace it and put a piece of hose or something around the cable where it contacts the fairing. Your cable is probably ready to be replaced. At least give it a good once over. Look at the cable where it connects to the lever while you are working the lever. It might be getting frayed.

Mine gets nothing more than a little pasty/gooey every once in a while. The cable sheath is intact. I think mine seeps from the case along the cable until it jumps off where the cable rests on the fairing edge.

If the outer sheath is not damaged; clean the cable and ride.

DO NOT try to tighten the cable ferrule threaded into the case.
They break very easily...

They break very easily...

VERY easily. That joint has an o-ring in it and will seal oil tight if it's just a little more than finger-tight.

I'd guess the plastic is worn through on the cable sheath where it's touching the chin fairing. I'd clean it off REALLY good with a degreaser like simple green. If you find a hole, wrap it with electrical tape or something similar. Replace it when you get a chance.

No problems there. I know about this and keep that ball joint greased.

Wonder if you could clean around a hole in the sheathing with rubbing alcohol, then use liquid tape?

Thing is too, that it IS primary fluid that is leaking. Maybe not a huge amount, but over time...

Buddy had a weep at the cable on his Sporty, he'd wipe it down, feeling like it was such a minute amount that it wasn't a pressing issue, right up to the point where he lost enough of his primary fluid that it fried his clutch.

I find the above statement hard to believe.
There has to be more to the story than the "sporty" owner divulged.

My friends issue was that oil leaked out of the cable orifice on a long ride. (I expect the fitting split) It didn't leak out of the cable itself as in the original post.

He did have to tear his bike apart though. Clutch R&R from excessively low fluid. I can't remember if it knackered anything else. It came out at the cable. Just sayin.

I've seen posts on here that insufficient fluid causes your transmission to go crunch. People have mistaken the primary case drain plug thinking it is the engine oil, then they top off the swingarm oil but never refill the primary. A short while later you have an expensive project on your hands.
