I want to adjust the suspension on my xb9r, but i am unfamiliar with the settings. All settings are factory set right now and the bike feels too bouncy over the bumps. I have some dive on the front end when turning while going slow in 1st gear and when laying off the throttle while turning 25-30mph 2nd/3rd gear. I weigh 170. Increasing the compression dampening on the forks will take care of the dive? increasing the rebound dampening will help with the bounce? adjusting the preload helpful? |

You say it is factory set right now... You mean by the book, or the way it came from the dealer? |

I set my bike up according to the specs in the shop manual for the 9S. It worked pretty well, but the front was still a little nervous under hard acceleration. I backed the rebound damping off an additional quarter turn and the bike was rock solid up to the rev limiter in fifth gear. Don't hesitate to purchase a shop manual for your R... It's money well spent. |

Dave, do you have a list of suspension settings other than the ones in the owners manual? I've been playing around with mine a bit but can't seem to get it to be controlled in all conditions, if that's even possible. I'd love some other suggestions to try. |

I can in the morning. I back both the comp and rebound off about 1/4 turn from the settings they have, just feels better to me that way. Dave |

These are based on owners manual settings ADDITIONAL TUNING NOTES RELATIVE TO AGGESSIVE HANDLING SETTINGS TO IMPROVE STEERING QUICKNESS AND COMPLETE CORNERS EASIER Try this first: Increase rear shock preload 1 position If more is desired: Reduce Front Preload (Turn Adjuster Counterclockwise until an additional line is visible). If more is desired: Increase rear compression clockwise one-quarter to one-half tunrs If more is desired: Increase front rebound Clockwise one-quarter turns. TO IMPROVE RIDE QUALITY Try this first: Reduce Compression Damping, Counterclockwise one-quarter to one-half turns If more is desired: Reduce rebound damping, Counterclockwise one-quarter to one-half turns If more is desired: Reduce rear shock Preload 1 position. Thanks for any help. I have followed owners manual to try and quicken turn in, but the bike just feels twitchy rather than quick. Mine just doesn't feel "flickable" but more like nervous instead. Never that planted, riding a rail through the corner feeling. It's always moving all over the place. (Message edited by mr_cuell on August 18, 2004) |

Mr_Cuell... What tires are you running? If they are the stock Dunlops... TAKE THEM OFF!!! I think the bike will handle better on the rims. Just kidding, but maybe try Pilot H2's, Metzeler Sportec M1's (my favorite), or Pirelli Diablo's. |

Yessir - I am on the stock Dunlops. It irritates me that the stock tires are so easily improved upon. You would think they would get that at the factory and say - this can be better for virtually no change in cost. I'll try the M1's when I wear these down a bit. |

I wouldn't even wait to wear them down... I did on my 12R, but as soon as I put on the Metzeler's I INSTANTLY felt a LOT better about the bike (and I felt pretty good about it with the Dunlops). It didn't take any more than the 20' of my driveway in a straight line to tell that the M1's were WAY better. It really IS that much better. |

Yea I love the bike right now, I don't even really mind how busy it is through the corners, but I have yet to be "wowed" by any handling prowess, especially when compared to it's similarly priced overseas competition. But I still love it, and prefer it over anything else I could afford. I just want it to feel planted in the corners. |

The suspension setup chart I used to tame my XB9SL can found in this thread... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/14412.html?1028589809 I believe they were developed by Shawn Higbee and originally published in the Battle2win newsletter/magazine thingee. As with everything short of the Laws of Thermodynamics and Newtonian Physics...YMMV. |

"but I have yet to be "wowed" by any handling prowess" Get a new set of tires . I think with the GP-ish dimensions of the bike it makes VERY good use of tires that are more GP-ish in their dimensions. |
