That motor has been crashed! Shifter mount is gone, lots of oil leaks, and it looks completely grungy. I'd offer only a few hundred plus shipping, not the $1000 they want. They would be better off completing the dis-assembly and selling the internals. |

I contacted hammer performance and revolution performance. I'm just doing some planning and haven't made a decision yet. I figure I have lots of time before my budget allows an engine build. Meanwhile I'm going to bust out the 83 Virago and rebuild the carbs to get it back on the road.... already looked at it today. took the plug out to check for spark, hit the starter and got shot in the face with gasoline out of the spark plug hole... That was very uncomfortable for a very long time... |

^ ouch! Important Safety Tip- carburetor is a French word that means "leave it alone". Run some Sea Foam or equivalent through them, give them a rap with a screwdriver to loosen the needles and floats if they're stuck and fire that mother up! Oh yea, better change the oil if the cylinders were full of gas. |

the effect was very similar to the good ol' gas chamber rite of passage we military folk have to endure.... it pretty much ruined my day. My eyes are still swollen and sore... shoulda seen me stumbling and coughing and crawling to the shower blind as a bat. you fella's would have had a good laugh for sure... ha! Thanks for the engine tip, Hugh. I'm going to wait it out and rebuild what I have the way I really want it. I'll get the virago back on the road soon... |

I've seen some really nice Virago Cafe Racer builds... Sorry, didn't mean to go off topic... Well, yes I did

That would be a mighty nice backup bike for an XB. |

if I sent the crank for a rebuild, do you guys think it should be lightened? What are the pros and cons of doing this? Will it make the engine run better or worse? that virago is nice indeed! |

Lightening the crank will theoretically allow the engine to rev faster. Talk to the guys at the crank shops- they can advise you whether it's worth the effort and cost for a street bike or not. |

One of the problems with a 45 degree V-twin is that you can't really balance them. A heavy crank help to dampen the vibrations. Making the crank lighter will increase the vibration. I would have to think that it's going be reduce the life of things like the isolators. By how much I have no idea. I would probably be pretty conservative about doing this for a street bike. I would guess the factory played with a variety of cranks during testing and found what works well on the street. Track use you may be willing to put up with more vibration for that extra bit of responsiveness from the engine. |

That is the only virago I have ever seen that actually looks nice. |

Jason, rather than lightening, go for balancing. Nate, google Virago Cafe Racer, there's a lot of 'em being built. |
