I finished up my '03 XB9R S/T (Sport Touring) GPS/Navigational system mount today. It turned out far better than I imagined. Now I can't get lost...also, I've properly calibrated the differential between my speedo and my actual speed thanks to the GPS. I need to (for safety's sake) fabricate a small retention lanyard and then it's truly done. It's rock solid, doesn't bump around (even though our bikes vibrate quite a bit,) and has ZERO contact and obstruction (except the speedo it covers) under the fairing and the ZeroG S/T windscreen. It was expensive, but it rocks and I certainly get strange stares at night (I'll post that pic tonight also) as I blip down the freeway basked in iridescent cobalt blue swaths of navigational luminance... Ive been thinking about mounting a radar dectector in that little divit at the inside of the bottom of the windscreen. Looks pretty slick,nice job. | ||

did you hard wire? or are you using batteries? if hard wire, did you go straight to the battery or fuse box? | ||

For my Rino 120, I used a mount from www.ram-mount.com. Will post pics when I get a chance. | ||

I'm just using batteries...I don't want the hassle of wiring/charging issues. I get 30+ hours on a set of rechargeable AA's... I like the Ram mounts (and considered them) but I liked the fact that there were already locking disks and mounting kits for my GPS V without much guess work...although the setup works pretty well for an eyeballed guesstimate for bar lengths/height. I don't need a radar/soda mount/datalogger, so this suits me just fine. BTW, at 80 on the speedo I'm actually doing 76.2 on the GPS. Chris | ||

No Donnie, I have not. At least now I can accurately plead my case since I can show a dataplot of just how fast I was actually going... Besides, I live in SoCal...I'm luck to get above 70... Now that I have the Throttlemiester, the C/C action is nice since I can just set it and forget it! Chris | ||

Very nice! When I learn how to add photos here I'll post some of my Streetpilot mounted to my Buell tankbag. I power mine with the Battery Tender plug and fabbed a extension cord and run it under the seat to the tankbag. | ||

Mike: That'd be great; love to see the pics. I have a Street Pilot (in addition to the GPS V) also - use it for the spousal unit in her Astro van... I am getting all of the part numbers, addresses, and costs for anyone who might want to do this. I'll warn everyone and say that it was not cheap -- in fact, it was really too expensive, but I love how it turned out. It almost looks stock, especially with my black Heli conversion...matches the tones nicely. That's a great idea re: the battery tender plug...did you fuse it anywhere near the battery (or does the BT plug have that capacity built-in?) Thanks, Chris | ||

Nice setup! That looks very solid and easy to see. Maybe it's just the picture angle, but can you see the stock gauges from the riding position? I'm working on a cheap setup with an older eTrex Venture that my dad can't figure out how to use for fishing (so I'm going to "borrow" it). I just ordered some parts today from GPScity.com. The plan is to take this GPS  and this RAM mounting clip  and attach it flush on the stock triple tree (haven't broken down to get the Helibars yet). That way it for sure won't block any instruments or interfere with steering or the low stock windshield. For $20 I ordered a 12V adapter because this GPS only lasts 4-6hrs on chargeable AA's. I figure I can tap into some power under the fairing since the fuse box is right there? | ||

Hey Eric... It obscures the speedo but I don't care since I use the GPS if I *really* need to see how fast I'm going. The tach is in plain sight. Besides, 4.5K in 5th = 80MPH (indicated on the stock speedo, 76.2 MPH on the GPS) when I'm just cruisin'...I really don't need the speedo. There is absolutely NO interference with the fairing/windshield/controls. Sits on the key just a tad, however. I can move it anyway I please without tools yet it doesn't swing around at speed. I use the Battery Tender harness sold at H-D dealers- I think about $6. It is fused. Then go to a auto parts store and get the 2 pole trailer connecter that matched the BT plug to make the cord to reach your gps. Then when you don't use gps just unplug and remove the cord. | ||

Yeah, I guess it was the tach I was asking about really. I usually look at that instead of the speedo because it's easier to read (stupid 9R tiny italic numbers). I'm wondering because if this cheapo GPS works out I may want to upgrade to something like the GPS V with mapping capabilities. The one I have will trace a route and that can be loaded to a computer (or load a route into it from the computer with city markers) but really it's more of a glorified speedo and odometer! I'd love to see pics of it at night! | ||

Y'all should see the palm pilot (actually Handera 330) that is strapped to a thin piece of oak bouncing around the tank on my Cyclone, anchored to the fuel tank vent, with a wire running over the seat to the GPS receiver in the tail bag. All powered off the bike, with a fused wire coming direct from the battery. Quite the monstrosity, works remarkably well. When I can finally afford a CityX, I will probably get a more integrated and smalle solution. Can you see your oil light with that setup? | ||

Oil light!? I use a turkey thermometer strapped to the tank with a piece of duct tape which is wired to a relay with a step-up transformer jacking the voltage to 220. THis, in turn, is wired directly to my testicles. Should I experience a low oil sit-cha-ashun, I'm both mildly annoyed and shockingly informed -- my version of shock and awe. When I got married my wife made me get rid of the sheet metal furniture I had made. I used to work in a sheet metal shop and built a TV stand and component rack as well as a 400 capacity CD rack out of sheet metal. It was free and hey, the industrial look is in right? It had to go for some nice wood furniture. Ya gotta love the homemade stuff! | ||

Cold, I too, would like the GPS V. I almost bought a IV from a friend but I think I want a colr screen and mapping capabilities. But size is going to play into this as I want to mount it in my truck and boat but also want it small enough to mount on the bike..........decisions, decisions......... | ||

Look at the eTrex Legend and Vista. They're the same format as the Venture I've acquired but have color screen and mapping. I think the advantage of the V is the larger screen and more buttons, and that big antenna may help? The eTrex ones wedge pretty easily between the dashboard and windshield of a truck or boat because they're rubber coated, I haven't owned a mount for it until I got this one now and that worked pretty well. | ||

Coolice's setup is sweet, has the GPS on the tank bag along with the MP3 player which is plugged into his phone somehow. Gets an incoming call & the MP3 is automatically cut & switches over to the phone. | ||

What kind of earbud/helmet do you use for the phone? I tried it once and anything over 20mph was too much wind noise, and that was on my old quiet bike. | ||

Autocom Pro system, HIGHLY recommend it. I can hear the music, cell phone, or passenger with molded earplugs at all speeds. Talked on the phone, on a ride with Dyna, to Easyflier asking when we would be at our lunch destination. Neat huh! I have it in a fanny pack or in tank bag, runs on 9v. battery or bike power. I keep it portable to use on other bikes. Battery lasts 2-3 days depending if I have passenger using intercom. Check out AutocomAmerica website. You can also tap the radar detector or GPS into the Autocom. | ||

Just mounted my Radar detector today on my XB12R. I'll post pictures as soon as I get someone from work with a digital camera to take them. I had noticed a radar detector mount on a friend's ZX9 Kawasaki and it looked like it might work with no mods on a Firebolt. He sold the bike recently, so I contacted him and he still had the mount. I picked it up on the weekend and I got lucky-it works with zero modifications. For anyone who needs to do this on a Firebolt, the mount came from radarbusters.com and it's the one for Kawasaki that has 6mm female threads and screws onto the left outer mirror post inside the fairing. All I did was pull the outer nut, put some blue locktight on the threads, and screwed the mount on with a wrench. Now all I need to do is hook up the wiring. The detector came with a RJ11 jack and cable with vampire tap for direct wiring, but I want connectors that are waterproof. I am going to tie in to the red/grey wire coming out of the ignition switch (accessory power) and the ground wire will be connected to the ground lug on the bottom front of the steering head. xbolt12 | ||

Barkandbite, If you look at pic #1 in your post and look at the lower left corner of your Garmin-see the nut on the inside of the fairing holding the left mirror on, that is where the mount screws on. It simple replaces the nylock nut on the mirror. The rest of the mount is similar to yours with an articulated post and articulated platform. However, the platform is simply a flat plate with a velcro surface-you have to put velcro on the bottom of the radar detector as well. I am also going to secure the detector with a velcro strap (a computer cable routing strap). xbolt12 | ||
