Oh here goes: On cold start, bike fires right up, idles normal then begins to fluctuate between high and low for a while and will then settle into a stable idle. Sometimes it idles really high (2500) rpm for not apparent reason, for example, exiting the highway and sitting at a light on the exit ramp... idling at 2500 rpm. Sometimes it idles almost perfect, then suddenly drops down 200 rpm or so, then settles back into normal idle 1100-1200 maybe. Sometimes it fast idles on cold start and won't slow down until I blip the throttle or load the engine a bit with the clutch to drag the engine speed down. So.... where do i start to figure this out? In tunerpro: TPS 8bit is usually around 20. I see it fluctuates a bit between 18-21 as it goes from cold to hot. TPS voltage remains .38 to .42 or so. IAC steps change from 70-100 No intake leaks. Took apart the IAC an cleaned it maybe 6 months ago. It wasn't really dirty to begin with to my surprise. Grounds on battery, under seat and behind headlights are tight if that matters. Pulled the fuel pump fuse and i can hear some whirring/ratching sounds from the IAC when i turn the key... What else? |

Engine temp input being flakey would be my first guess. If it intermittently thinks it's cold, it will respond. What's the mechanical idle set at? If it's a bit high, the engine can "hang" at higher RPM. |

oh yeah forgot to add the engine temp is about ambient when I start, then slowly raises as the engine warms up. nothing funny going on there. it's an 08 so idle is controlled by the ecm. or not in this case. |

My 08 XT has a similar idle problem. I just cleaned the IAC and the throttle body but did not solve the problem. Does your's idle properly once hot? My bike runs perfectly once warm. I have not had any replies to my post on the issue. |

yeah once warms its better. BUT it still messes up randomly it seems... doesn't idle up and down as much once hot, but it does the random high idle on a hot start or while sitting at a light, or it does the sudden rpm drop likes going to stall on me.... but it usually recovers. |

I went through this on a Triumph this summer. Eventually the IAC completely failed and had to be replaced. The Triumph was throwing a code with the check engine light coming on though. The code pointed to the IAC. |

In anticipation of that problem, I ordered a new IAC. That's all I can come up with at this point. Guess it'll be here in a week or so... |

well new valve is installed. doesn't look like it made any improvement... idle still revs up and down during warmup and will not drop out of high idle until i blip the throttle or something... anyone have any ideas? |

well the new IAC didn't help. Now I have a spare I guess. The idle problem definitely lies with the ebr ecm. I plugged in the stock ecm and didn't have any issues with the idle. i did have a front cylinder not firing but all i can come up with was maybe a bad connection with the stock ecm? i checked the coil and replaced the plugs just in case... |

Sounds like it's time to call up EBR. |
