so... havent gotten the 9 out much(read at all) over the last month or 2, and really didnt get alot of riding on it after it got reassembled simply because the battery was weak, then shot, and ive been to cheap to replace it. threw in a second hand one last night to run it for a bit. plenty of juice and pops right off so thats not a problem...

but, on to my problem...

it seems to be hanging up around 2000 rpm when i let off the throttle. pulling up to stop and such. it will idle down, but takes a few seconds before it decides to.

then, the other problem which could be a symptom of the same overall problem, is that it has a stutter. almost like its missing under throttle. it seems to be over most of the rev range but more noticeable midrange so its lacking power and seems to be fighting itself a little then around 5500-6000 it takes off.

but... if your giving it 3/4 or so throttle its picking up speed, and then crank it to full throttle and you can feel it actually slow down its acceleration a bit.

its irritating me.

tps has been redone and checked a couple times.

could it be a timing issue? intake leak or similar leak?

one of the techs back in my shop said we had a few xb's with ridebility issues that cleared up with a new temp sensor...

another question for someone that knows, is the fuel injector wiring interchangeable? as in, can the plug from the front be put on the back and back on front with no problems?

dont know which way it was originally, and have tried it both ways when i reassembled and couldnt really tell a difference. seemed to run both ways.

any brilliant ideas before i tear the damn thing to pieces?

What's your idle at? I have found (more on my 9 than my 12, for some reason), that they can be picky with a slightly high idle- exhibiting much of what you have described in terms of the hanging. The stutter could just be a gummed up throttle body.

If it were me, I'd start simple- back the idle off a bit (mine seems happiest about 975RPMs), and run some Seafoam through her.

found that answer, now i just need to take it apart to see if i have the correct color wires going to the correct injector...

ill have to check the idle, but its about where its always been.

I agree with Andymnelson. My idle hangs when I set it above 1050 rpm.
Also, you say it sat for a while, gas goes bad in a hurry these days. Seafoam or some Marvel Mystery Oil or the like just might clear it up.

Try the fresh tank of gas. If the problem(s) persist ...

A hanging idle is often a lean symptom. In tubers, a sign of a leaking intake manifold seal. Don't know if the XB's are as susceptible. The bogging at throttle application is also a lean symptom, and at those RPM's not usually noticed if the intake seals are starting to go.

ECMSpy is your friend. Check the AFV; if higher than 100ish, an air leak. Lower than 100ish, think ETS,02 sensor, or a leaking fuel injector. When my X-1 had driveability issues, the AFV was in the 80's. Found the rear injector was 'drooling', causing a rich mixture in the rear cylinder, and the 02 sensor reported that, causing the ECU to lean out the fuel map.

Hope this helps, let us know how it goes, Dave

Higher than 100 AFV can also mean 10 percent alcohol fuel, low pump output, or bad injectors requiring the open time to increase. Mine went down about 7 percent after I changed my pump.

well got the hangup idle figured out. my cables seem to have been adjusted a hair to snug. loosened them up and it stopped. atleast one fix was easy.

as for the stutter, didnt figure it was the fuel since the gas light was on when i got it out and had just filled it up before i rode it...

but i ran 3 tanks of fuel through it yesterday(yes i spent my day playing!) and it was still there. so... my friend came over with ecmspy and we reset the tps again. it was a little off, and it did help some...

now it clears up if i roll on the throttle a little harder, and the stutter is mostly contained between say 5500-6500/7ish maybe. but if its stuttering and i roll into the throttle a little harder it straightens out and goes.

but... on one run, i wound it up to between 7-7500 for a min or two and it was cruising fine. then it started to stutter(not revlimiter stutter) and the engine light flashed a few times. let off the throttle, no odd noises, and was running smooth. roll back into it, run it for a minute then itd do it again. then the next run it couldnt get itself past 7000rpm. felt just like i was at the limiter, but i had a good 500 more to go before that. so i slowed down, stopped, and ran the heck out of it up through the gears. it would bang the limiter just fine. run hard all the way up and hit it in the lower gears. (these were not all back to back by the way)

but still spit and sputter if i wasnt on the gas very hard(mid throttleish)

now granted, most of the time it probably wont bother me so much, being as i ride fairly hard and wouldnt have to much of a problem needing to be a little heavier on the throttle.

but its irritating me. and something is obviously not right.

an added note, nothing was done to the motor besides a stock rebuild. mainshaft bearing was going out, so it got torn down for that and figured it should just get all new bearings, rings, a hone and such while it was apart. it has had a hard life...!
