I have a 2003 buell xb9r I recently replaced the clutch, and since then I have put about 1,000 miles on the bike. Today I was riding up the freeway when my bike lost power. I still had RPMs but no power to the wheel.I pulled my clutch lever and there was still tension, then tried to shift and my shift lever had seized and would not shift down from 5th. I coasted off the freeway took off my inspection cover smelled to see if it smelt like burnt clutch and it didn't, although it was a bit low on oil. everything else still looked good. When I got home, I put oil in it put it up on the pitbull stand and started it. It was rattling a lot so I stopped and took off the whole case. Everything seems to look fine. I took everything apart inspected it and put it back together. I still can't shift, even with everything disassembled. when the bike is off, it acts as if it's in gear, and I am unable to move the rear tire. Once I start it up the tire doesn't move it just sits there as if the clutch were engaged or it was in neutral. When I try to shift with the bike on, it rattles really loud, as if I was trying to shift down when I'm going too fast.(like a grinding more than a rattle) |

Damn. My ironhead did exactly that when I was going over 100. Turned out the shift forks started to rub and heat up turned into a thermal runaway situation with the fork MELTING because it was bronze. I hope your tranny isn't messed up like mine was.
See the rod that the forks slid back and forth on? It was also bent like a banana due to the heat. |

damn, it would make sense that this is what happened to me because I was low on transmission fluid/oil. I hope my transmission isn't messed up too. The shop told me I'm looking at 10 hours of labor at $95 an hour. |

did you notice any issues with your transmission before it crapped out on you, or was it just "boom" doesn't work anymore. |

when i bent a 3rd gear shifter fork on my 03, i had perfect use of first and second, just no more gears after that. So my symptoms were different than yours.. since it had to be opened up, i sent the trans to a good shop to be reworked, its being put back together at the moment, but should shift like butter now.. anyways, good luck |

My '79 was running just fine that night. Cool air gave the old cast iron some more powah so I dumped the throttle on the empty highway just to see. It felt like it went into neutral. I coasted to a stop with the engine idling happily but unable to shift at all. I had plenty of oil in there too. The old bitch must have thought I was having too much fun. |

It was indeed my shifting for with a plethora of other crap. One of my bearings blew forcing one gear to slam into the other, then putting pressure on the shift fork. After some time it strained the shift fork and snapped it. Thanks for all your help guys |
