I also have what I know is excessively loud ticking, especially around 2k to 3k+ RPM. I would really like to know what the problem is and how to fix it.

Just a guess but maybe a collapsed lifter?

First thing I'd try is a compression test.

You may want to try some Seafoam in the oil.
I've use it to "unstick" lifters before. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Pour in 1/3 can, run for a while to see if it clears up. Then change oil and filter.

Just a thought, but switching to synthetic oil an a Buell will make it louder simply because is doesn't dampen sound as well as Dino oil.

I freaked when I first switched on my Buell.

Maybe? Maybe something else. Did you recently switch maybe?
