My XB12Ss now has 22,000 miles and the vibration has increased quite a bit lately. One of the things I checked was the primary chain. It was somewhat loose at 3/4" to 1" at multiple spots. I tightened it up and rechecked. It ended up being about a total 1/2 turn of the tightening bolt, putting the chain 1/2" to 3/4".

The vibration has gone down a surprising amount from that. However, I'm now hearing a whine from the primary case. I've found some posts talking about the need to actually loosen the chain when you hear whining. But doing so would bring the vibration back.

Should I loosen it back up some?

You could give that a try, whining is not good.

I do have to ask, did you do the checks with the engine dead cold or hot?

Whining is bad.
Loosen that sucker up before riding it any more.

One thing to remember is Aluminum expands with heat a lot more than Steel.
That's why the chain tightens up when it gets hot in there.

I always adjust on the loose side to be safe.

Too loose = a little extra vibes

Too tight = ouch my bearings!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback.

I'm definitely going to loosen it back up. I read a lot of posts about the service manual spec not being correct with the 3/8"-1/2", and instead we should be using 1/2"-3/4". But even at that I guess it's too tight for mine. On the way to work this morning it even seemed to pop the clutch on me -- never had that happen before in 22k+ miles. Thankfully I'm only 5 miles from home, where it will sit all night tonight before I check it again in the morning after loosening it back up.

I originally checked and tightened it with the engine stone cold after sitting all night.

I *think* my vibes are coming from elsewhere anyway (front mount) so although tightening the chain helped quite a bit I'm still getting very bad pulsating when braking. Thought it was just pads at first (they were ready for replacement anyway) but it's only gotten worse since changing pads and tightening the chain.

I've never replaced it but as I understand it that's a classic sign of front mount going/gone bad.

Tomorrow morning I will be wrenching on the bike.
