I was out for a ride about 2 weeks ago and the bike just stopped running. Had power and it would turn over but not fire. It smelled of fuel. So now after days of messing with it heres where i'm at -ecmspy diagnostics, new o2 sensor, tps resets, static timing tuning(which was way off), checked both plugs for spark and both injectors were squirting. After letting it sit for a five days and not trying to start it it fired up and ran for about 12 minutes then wanted to bog when throttle was applied. I'm thinking that either the plugs are shot from the flood of fuel or that the crank position sensor my be going seeing that the timing was so far out. Anyway I'm really frustrated and could use some more ideas of what to be looking at/for. Also anyone with ecmspy screen shots of good running xb's would be appreciated. Thanks |

Take a good look at the engine temp sensor reading as this is really the only thing that can add a bunch of fuel. Was your AFV skewed when you looked? |

The tps sensor can be going bad. Also check the Plug wires at the coil. The front one will rub and when you throttle up once warm it will cross fire into the frame and at the wire harness making it act stupid. Which makes you case your tail trying to find the problem. |

Thanks for the replies. If i can get it to run for awhile again i'll keep an eye on the engine temp. Didn't notice anything on the AFV. The plug wires are good and when i changed them last i put some fuel line over the front wire as the old one was worn through. I guess i'll start swapping parts from the other xb in the garage until the problem goes away. I hate not having it running! |

The fuel regulator can cause this; only when the engine is hot! The ECM think the engine is cold an apply more fuel than is necessary. Ed. |

Well i narrowed it down to something with the timing. When i set it then try to start it it doesn't start. Then when i recheck the timing its nowhere close to what i left it at. I put the crank position sensor from the other bike on it and get the same results. Checked the wires for shorts and found none. Could i have sheared the key in the pinion gear? That drives the front intake cam gear that turns the timing cup? Crap! |

Well i finally had time to do some work today. The pinion gear key was sheared! The intake pushrod on the front cylinder is visibly bent. The exhaust looks ok but i'll check it later when i pull the valve cover to check the rear cylinder. So now the question is why... What would cause the key to shear other than just... well shearing? haha! Anyone ever had this happen? What else do i need to check before ordering replacement parts? Thanks |

If the pushrod is bent I would also check the rocker and valve. Might even pull the head to see what happened inside (if anything). |

Seen them sheer it happens. May be as simple as a backfire. Replace parts and recheck everything. Should be ok. |

if the pushrod is bent then the valves have hit the pistons and there is more damage in the engine |

I will take the heads off and check the valves and top of the piston. If that looks ok i'm putting it back together. It did run once after all this happened when i reset the timing then i guess the pinion gear moved a bit and thats when i took it apart. It does turn over normal with no abnormal noises. The oil i drained didn't have any big metal pieces in it. |

Anyone know what the compression should be on a cold engine? I have 30psi on both cylinders with the rockers removed just turning the motor over in 5th by hand. |

Too late to check compression if both valves are always closed. But you could do a cylinder leak down test with rockers off. That would be a more telling test anyway. |

Thanks. I thought about that right after i posted. Leak down test is next. Spent the day by the pool with too many adult beverages to mess with it now! |
