Looking to replace a primary cover on an 08 lightning. I see Blast primary covers on ebay, but I'm unsure if they are the same as the XB covers. Can anyone confirm if they are the same? Also, I'm looking to replace the cover because the clutch snapped off right at the ferrule. The remaining ferrule was so tight I could not get it out and now have to drill it out and helicoil it. Does anyone know the thread and bolt size of the ferrule bolt so I can get the right size helicoil (Message edited by thepod on April 22, 2012) |

The blast covers have no inspection hole for the primary chain ,thats what i know! maybe there is loctite on the remaining of the ferrule? so if you drill it very careful with a small drill ,maybe it heats up enough to soften the loctite or stuff whats on the thread to remove it in one piece!? |

blast covers won't have a place to put your shifter. |

But drilling and tapping the hole for the shifter is easy if everything else will work. |

Besides the lack of an inspection hole, one of the cover screws on the top will not line up. Buellistic ran into that problem with his XB 12 primary gearing upgrade in his Blast!. He glued a screw into the hole for appearance. It works otherwise. Don't know if it will work the other way around though with a Blast! cover on an XB. |

So your saying the end of the clutch cable broke off in the primary cover?? If that's the case take the cover off. cut the end of the cable off so you now just have the cover with the broken part of the cable still in the cover. Take a torx bit that's a tight fit in the hole and Tap it in (use common sense, make sure its not tooooo big) the hole the inner part of the cable used to go threw. Now unscrew it....might need little heat but not normally. |

Blast cover win't fit the larger shift shaft of an '08. Might work up through '05 though. |

Looks like the thread is a 5/16-24. Thanks for all the help but it appears to be helicoil time. I'll post some results as I go along. |

I thought it was a smaller diameter, but I haven't looked at my cable in a long time so I could be wrong. Have you actually wrecked any of the threads yet? Seems like the application of some heat should help remove that piece. The only thing I don't like about a helicoil (or other thread insert) is that it will go into the oring seat so your cable may never seal again. You may need to apply a large amount of Hylomar to the oring area to form a seal or deal with a constant leak. |

i screwed up the clutch cable threads on my sporty's primary cover and helicoiled it two years ago without any problems at all. just be very careful when setting up to drill and tap; the aluminum that cover is made out of is extremely soft. |

So I got a new clutch cable and ferrule thread is indeed a 5/16-24. I was able to retap the primary and push and cut the remaining threads from the old ferrule bolt out. The primary case still had good threads in it, so I was able to screw the new cable in with no problems. Just in case, I added a little permatex to the threads to help seal it. Haven't tried it out obviously but things look good so far. Thanks for all the help on this board. (Message edited by thepod on May 01, 2012) |
