My buddy changed my rear tire on Saturday. We put everything back together (had to remove pulley tensioner to slide the belt back on). Rode for 10 seconds and boom, all of a sudden bike stops moving and makes horrible noise. Turns out the bolts securing that square gasket thing in the primary cover went somewhere and the thing was flopping around in there. I checked the parts manual and found the primary cover section but couldn't pinpoint which bolts I needed. Does anyone know the size/type or part numbers for the bolts circled below?

Well that is the front pulley, not the primary cover, so I don't know if you were looking in the right spot or not. I'll check my parts books to see if I can get you some numbers. |

According to my parts book, there are two screws that go in those holes, I guess the other two are empty, the part number you want is "3594". This does not sound like a Buell specific part, so you may be able to get it at any HD dealer, and odds are its the same screws the Sportster uses. |

You have another problem too! The seal on the end of the main output shaft is gone, and it looks like you could have a possible bearing failure. |

Two things: My parts book cross-reference section shows p/n 3594 is a 1/4-20X 5/8 knurled head (Allen or socket head) screws, Grade 8. A hardware store or home improvement place will have them, if you prefer. Second: The 'square gasket thing' is the lock plate for the hex nut it covers. If you had 'horrible noises and the bike quit moving" that nut may have backed off. A careful examination of the drive train would be in order, because the front belt pulley may not be attached to the trans output shaft now. And I Would Not Ride further until I had checked, to minimize/avoid any further damage. Dave |

Thanks all!!!! I'll go to either dealer or Home Depot/Lowes for the bolt. Didn't realize I was missing something. And it could be bearing failure?? Crap. I have the service manual coming in the mail this week. Guess I'll have to replace the bearing. My friend put a temporary bolt in the lock plate and the bike went in first no problems no noise. Now I'm kind of scared but guess we'll have to inspect it further. Edit- Found two different output seals at American Sport Bike. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-prodshow/17099.html for all XBs, and another http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-prodshow/17305.html They look different though, different product? Good on ya re the service manual. Spend some quality time with it, then ...... I can't tell from the photo if the bright spots are metal shavings. In any case, the square plate should come off fairly easily. Take a block of wood, and a hammer, and gently tap on the center of the pulley near the nut (not on the nut) and see if it will move toward the engine. If not, you are golden; just follow the procedure in the service manual for tightening the nut and installing the lock plate. If those are metal bits, or the pulley does move in, you might want to pull the pulley off and see if you have damage from it being loose. |

Here is a pic of the main output shaft end seal: You should also remove the belt, sprocket nut retainer, nut, and sprocket and remove the large output seal behind the sprocket and rotate the main output drive gear to check the bearing. Sand may have made its way inside the transmission if that end seal has been missing for a while. The first bearings to suffer would be the two roller bearings that sit inside the main output drive gear and support the main transmission shaft. |

Thanks AK, I will do that check tonight. Good thing I have both of those tools lol. Ericz- Thanks for posting it up! I hope the seal hasn't been gone too long but when it rains it pours around here so going to do through check. Brother - I just say some stuff about the shifter and forcewinder intake for the tubers in that link? Service manual comes in tomorrow. Hopefully it stops raining in Maryland by then! |

Thanks all for the help!! I contacted American Sport Bike and he doesn't stock the seal, so waiting for my local HD dealer to call me back. Got the service manual yesterday so I can take a good look at everything down there per ya'lls advice. |
