just fine, or is the 2008 and up improvements worth just buying the later model bike. I have a chance to get a good used clean, garage kept, low miles (2000) Xb12Ss totally stock for a decent price, just want to make sure its the right move. Also toying with getting an XR1200, but really leaning towards the Buell.

I've got that exact bike. It's got 40K+ miles on it with no major problems. IMO the biggest benefit of the '08 is the bigger bearing journals. That only matters if you destroy the bottom end though. It's kind of a deal that you either won't ever notice, or it's a huge deal kind of thing. No problems with mine (yet), others have a box of junk with far fewer miles. I think running them at high RPM may be hard on them. I let mine do most of it's work in the low RPM range, which it does very well anyway. If you want the Ss version you might want to take what you can find. I don't think that many of them were made. |

If you tend to hit rev limit often, the bigger bottom end of the 08 will be a blessing. The newer oiling system aint bad neither. |

The only STRONGLY recommended mod to the 06 would be the addition of the bronze oil pump gear. A bit spendy if you have it done at a shop but if you're handy and have a shop manual, the change can be done over a leisurely weekend. I just can't recall if the 06 had the bronze gear or still had the steel. <edit> - it appears that 2006 was the first year that the bronze gear was a standard production item. Slaughter, you had me scared for a minute there! I was pretty sure I had the updated bronze gear on my 06. Then I read I don't! Then I read I do! Pulled the Ss out of it's corner today for a nice ride. It's actually got just shy of 48K miles on it at this point. Still going strong. |

Go test ride an XR1200 at your nearest friendly neighborhood H-D dealership. There will be no question then. They are two totally different bikes. Both are capable bikes, but since you asked... There is no comparison in handling (stock machine vs stock machine) between the two, the Buell wins hands down. Plain and simple, if you ride the twisty roads on a regular basis get the Buell. If you ride a lot of flat slab, tooling around town kind a stuff, and dealership support is high on your list of needs, get the Harley. Nice bike! |

Xrs trying to keep up with XBs in the hills of North Georgia don't always fair too well either. sorry couldn't resist
No one was hurt, he just went too hot into a hard right, (he was trying to keep up with Buells is true) and the bike crashed really well. I think it only needed handle bars, a lever, and a few hours after dinner, and he was back to riding in the morning. |

"it only needed handle bars, a lever...." So nobody at the shop said: "We'll have to order that." How UN-Buell can it get?!? |

Actually it needed quite a bit more than that. The control switches were ruined, and they were part of the main harness so they needed to be cut and spliced, and if I remember right, it was leaking oil.

He had driven several hundred miles to find a dealer that had what he needed, the local ones didn't. If it was a Buell we could of replaced everything without ever leaving the TWO parking lot |

The control harness does have a connector somewhere, they arnt hardwired in I was told. His oil bag was cracked and rtv'd back together. For the spill it took it wasn't that bad |

For the spill it took it wasn't that bad That was my main point. I was drinking when y'all were putting it all back together, so my memory's a bit foggy about what all they had to fix that night. If it was a Buell we could of replaced everything without ever leaving the TWO parking lot True that, I've seen motor mounts get replaced in the parking lot of T.W.O after someone tried to keep up with some guy named Erik Buell and went ditch digging. Man alive I miss T.W.O it just ain't the same without them. |

None that I know of. Britt is bust with the bakery, and GT is busy with his goats and such. Both seem to have settled into life beyond T.W.O GT and I are still in touch, and he's really enjoying being able to ride more when he wants rather than if he gets a chance. Everyone up here misses T.W.O more than words can say. But GT and Britt seem to be pretty happy, and that's what counts. "Not Dale's"(the gas station across the street) has been bought by some very good people, and they enjoy the motorcycle crowd. So on that end things are better. We just go from place to place, and nowhere yet has become the meeting place. |
