ok, it has been freaking me out long enough...
My neutral light will not go out. It flickers when I put it in gear but stays lit. At first it came and went, but now it is constantly on. My question is where is the switch located. I have a service manual on order (and payed for already) at my local dealership but no show yet. Anyway my guess is that it is the switch, but... Is there some thing that could have come loose or such that caused this? I am in the middle of changing tires right now and I have found what I think may be the switch but I'm not positive. Thanks for any help with this.

Ben

neutral indicator switch is located just forward of transmission output shaft on right side of bike, immediately inboard of the front belt sprocket.

Ben - it may not be the switch itself that is bad. Find the switch and trace the wiring back, looking for shorts/rubthroughs. It might be shorting somewhere along the route.

Fullpower, Thanks that is just where I thought it was. With a little rubber gromet 90 for the wire/s. I got antsy to try the new tires out so I will have a serious wrenching session in the am.

Darthane, Thanks to you too. Yeah I already had a rubthrough on my tail light. Plus I would just imagine that if that switch failed it would fail so that the light would not come on at all? I'm sure I need to get the 5 gal. bucket out and have a little session tomorrow. Then I will work on getting these tires scuffed in, such a hard job.

Ben

Be careful on the new tires.

Ben, it just depends on how the switch 'fails' and how it's wired to begin with. IIRC, the neutral indicator is a low-side switch, one wire. So when in neutral, something completes the circuit path to ground and the bulb lights up. If there's a rubthrough (your light being on only intermintently would seem to indicate this) it would accomplish the same thing as being in neutral as it vibrates/flops around and comes into contact with the engine/frame.

...this is what I've been doing for the past 3 months, by the way, although the problems on these damned prototypes are rarely so simple!
